Live Stream Style Social Media is Exploding. Are You on this Money Train Yet?

Periscope, Blab, Facebook Live… what do these platforms all have in common? They are live stream style social media and they are exploding.

And the list does not stop there. There are literally dozens of sites ready for you to login and get started on the social media video revolution.

There are big reasons this type of social media catching on and is a dream for marketers and business persons alike.

I was at the Periscope Summit September of this year and saw amazing things happening.

Things like:

  • People meeting for the first time, but they already felt like friends
  • People easily engaging in no stress and easy conversation
  • People RE-connecting after following each other’s Periscope streams in real time

Why are these things powerful?
Because your audience feels like they know you and we want to buy from people we know.

By using live streaming sites you are:

  • Increasing your exposure
  • Enhancing your visibility
  • Expanding your reach

And all of this ultimately shows proof of your authority. I talk about social proof and your expert status a lot in regards to LinkedIn and beyond. I talk about this because it really is the most important currency we have when we market ourselves online.

[Tweet “Real-time video platforms have a “human-ness” that allows for connection like never before.”]

Real-time video platforms have a creativity and a “human-ness” that allows you to connect and be seen in ways no other type of social media posting could do until now. In times past you had to mix up your posts with “behind the scenes” photos and dive deep for true authenticity while also sounding professional and connecting to your clients. This can be difficult to know how to write.

With live streaming you have the ability to be yourself, showcase your brand, and answer questions your clients have in real time. It is kind of like being your very own FAQ page only 1000 times better. The be-yourself quotient is upped dramatically when someone can actually see your face and respond to your facial expressions and tone of voice.

The “must-dos” and “bewares” of live video

With live video there are some “must-dos” and a few “bewares” that I want to discuss before you head out and create your first video.

  1. Live video posts are spontaneous for a reason, but if this is for your business be ready to talk the talk and walk the walk. Look professional as you feel fits your style and brand, and practice (or have notes!) to be ready once you click record. No one wants to watch someone ramble and stumble around. This will get better with practice, but practice you must in order to be seen as an expert in your field.
  1. Be sure to acknowledge and answer your audience’s questions that come up in the chat feed. Call them by name if you can! We all know how it feels to be ignored and your audience is there for a reason – to connect with you. Especially if they ask a question. Be the engaging and thoughtful guru you always knew you would be and take the time to answer their question thoughtfully.
  1. Find which platform is right for you. Take Periscope and Blab for example. Both are very similar in the fact that they are a live video streaming platform. But with Periscope you are more “on your own” showcasing what you are recording and only interacting with your audience through a chat screen. With Blab you can invite guests and they can move in and out of “seats” to actively be a part of your video session. While this is more interactive, it might not be your favorite soap box to climb on. Make sure you feel you are in the right place because that will translate to your audience members in spades.

Here are a few topic ideas to get you started.

  1. Show how you create a product or service.
  2. Interview someone who has knowledge in your industry. Let the audience control the interview – how often do they get to do that??
  3. Give your audience a training tutorial.
  4. Discuss your top 5 tips for your business niche.

Most of all have some fun! It’s a wild new world out there for social media marketing and it’s only going to get better and better for those of us willing to step out there and take these platforms for our own wild ride.

My New Addiction: Periscope! 10 Tips for New Users

Have I told you about my new favorite addiction?

A social media addiction.

I can’t get enough of the new platform Periscope!

Periscope is all about engagement. Engagement and using social media for authentic social selling has been my biggest belief and something I have staked my business on since I started.

Twitter and LinkedIn won’t have be jealous though because there are many ways to integrate these three platforms together to make an intensely strong marketing strategy that will engage your customers and bring you business.

[Tweet “Find out what Periscope can do for you!”]

But first, let’s talk about my new love, Periscope, why I love it and what this platform can do for you!

  1. Your audience can ask you questions and you can answer back. This is a perfect way to engage your audience, show that you value their time, and showcase that you do know what you are talking about. Really dive deep here into your presentation you never know where a question might take you.
  1. Your videos can be viewed for 24 hours. So simple to capture the people in your niche who are busy at the time of your Periscope video. WIth a 24 hour window you have the option to promote it to different social media sites several times and make sure those on the other side of the globe from you can watch it in their own comfortable time zone. AND, if you’ve saved the video to your device, you can repurpose all over the place.
  1. The Twitter icon that you can turn on before you broadcast. This simple feature allows you to auto-tweet out to your Twitter profile notifying your followers that you are broadcasting on Periscope. Such an easy way to connect two of my favorite platforms.
  1. Remember in my recent blog regarding ideas for posting to Facebook? (Read it here) Well Periscope brings you the ability to show a behind the scenes day in the life of your team, of your work, maybe even a peek into your personal life if that is something that will spark interest for your prospect clients and followers. I know in the social media world a lot of the people I work with want to know my systems for everyday social media posting. It’s so easy now to walk them through my office where I can step-by-step them through my process as I work!
  1. You don’t need any video set up, high tech expensive gear, or even your computer. Periscope can all be done from your smartphone and very easily I might add. Don’t worry about editing and making things look perfect. People don’t want to see that anymore! They want to see the real you. Reality TV at it’s best, so whip out your phone and get started. Though I will admit I always try to brush my hair before I turn that video on 🙂
  1. Periscope highlights the mundane and makes it valuable. You know most of life is the mundane day to day business we have to get through, highlighted by the more poignant memories we cherish. I firmly believe mundane is not bad. I do a lot of the same things over and over again every day and so I’ve become an expert at them in my field. I love taking those mundane moments and making them more exciting, more educational, and more valuable to me and my audience. And you can too. What in your life would you like to pass on and move from mundane to memorable?
  1. I love the “hearts” feature. I admit it. I think this is such a clever feature of the Periscope application. This hearts feature I’m referring to allows your viewers to tap on the screen and send heart icons when something is happening that they are “applauding” or approving of. It is such a small gesture, similar to a “like” on Facebook, but so fun and unique. This makes using Periscope that much more interesting to me. Want to send me some hearts?! I would love it!
  1. Your title is worth everything. Think of your headline in a blog post, your headline in LinkedIn, your URL, SEO, everything all rolled into one. That is what your title does for your Periscope viewing audience. Be sure to think about this one a little bit. And use emojis! Make it fun.

  1. Periscope is so new there are yet unknown ways to use it! I Love a new platform where I get to figure out what works and what doesn’t all for myself. Use some of the Periscope stats to hone in your research after you have done a few videos. Be sure to note, how many viewers you had, how many replayed your video, and how many hearts you received on each video and keep track! Then later go back and decide what was the most compelling subject matter for your audience, and do more of
  1. The Periscope audience does not expect a professional video. What a relief! Be sure you take note of background noise and other distractions but aside from that all have at it and have fun! Periscope users know that this is a livestream and thus the bar is set fairly low. There is a lot of forgiveness on Periscope as it is a new platform and just starting to emerge as a major player in the world of social media. I’m sure in the future there will be Periscope videos out there that rival the pro’s, but for now, it’s you and me and our home offices, and I will take full advantage of that!

Social Media Quick Tip: Periscope Channel

smtips_postheader

Periscope recently launched the ability to create your own Periscope channel. Now, I can direct people to periscope.tv/karenyankovich which is so cool, right?

When you direct people to this page, you can see the most recent posts that are still live. This is a post that I did right after the Periscope summit talking about whether people that were broadcasting were egotistical or just confident, but it’s a great way to send people to your Periscope page and to your scopes within that 24 hour period that they’re still live.

If you are not Periscoping, I’m telling you, I am fresh off the Periscope summit, and it was so energizing and inspiring to me, and I really think we’re going to see Periscope explode in the next few years, so get in on this.

Create yourself a Periscope channel. All you need to do is connect to Periscope with your Twitter account, download the app on your phone or your iPad, and just start watching other people’s broadcasts, but create your channel now. Grab your name, create your channel so that you’re branded, so that when you’re ready to broadcast your own scopes, you’ve got this already set up.

Periscope: do it, guys. Follow me! periscope.tv/karenyankovich. I’ll see you there!
