About the Episode:

My friend Suzie has a fantastic love deck that I use daily. Last, I picked a card that read, “give yourself permission to beat to your own drum.” That card got me thinking of how often we refrain from doing something beneficial to us just because we are worried about other people’s opinions.

In this episode, I permit you to beat your drum. Not everyone will love the beats, but it will differentiate you from the crowd. When I started in the online world, I was teaching social media. Having to learn how different platforms work was not a cake party. I decided to niche down to LinkedIn. Many people thought that my move would affect my business negatively. Look at me now. I am beating to my drum, and the results are undeniably good.

Here are three tips to help you give yourself permission to beat to your drum:

  1. Think about what makes you different and what makes you stand out.
  2. Think about it, then you got to own it. You got to be loud and proud. Be the best and tell everyone that you’re the best.
  3. Stop worrying about the people we know and what they think about you.

Think about the people that are looking for you. They are tired of the status quo. They want something different, and it’s upon you to make it easy for them to find you.

Karen Yankovich 0:23
Hello there. I’m Karen Yankovich. I’m your host today of the good girls get rich podcast. And today’s topic came to me when I was working with a deck. And I’ve you’ve may have heard me mentioned this. I know I’ve mentioned this deck before on the show. So I’m going to so I don’t know if you’ve heard those episodes. But my friend Susie morto, I will link to her stuff in the show notes created a deck called the field love card deck. And it’s an amazing deck. It’s not it’s not as woowoo as some decks can be right? It’s, it’s more mainstream, and it’s my favorite deck. I’ve got it out all the time I pick a card from this deck almost every day. And one of the cards that I picked, I picked it last week, and I thought this is such a great podcast topic. It’s a great topic to talk about on the show because it is so true. And it’s something that’s really hard for so many of the women that I speak to. And the card says you have permission to beat to your own drum. I’m gonna say that again, you have permission to beat to your own drum. So listen, Susie and I have been friends for a long time. I love the deck that she created. But even when I see these cards, sometimes I’m like, Yeah, you know what, I do need to do that I do need to be more me. Right. And I often joke sometimes that I am pretty sure that I’m the only LinkedIn and PR strategist that talks about your power chakra like making sure that you’ve you are speaking from your power chakra, right. But if you would have told me 10 years ago that I would have been doing that there’s no way I would, I would never believed you. Right, because I didn’t think that I could talk about those kinds of things. At the same time, I’m talking about business strategy, right. But now, I have given myself permission to beat to my own drum, right. And we tell our kids this, like, I don’t know, those of you that have kids, we tell our kids to be themselves, you don’t have to dress like everyone else. I know my parents, I grew up in northern New Jersey, mother’s line was always if everybody else jumped off the George Washington Bridge, is that what you would do to like, we teach our kids this, right. But somehow, somehow, it’s not easy to do ourselves. Somehow we feel like we need to do what everybody else is doing. And what we do what everybody else is doing. We can’t what everyone else is getting, and if that’s what you want, cool. But if you want what’s there for you, if you want the amazing things that are available to you, then we have to have a little bit of courage to beat to our own drum. And I gotta tell you, the older I get, the less I give a crap about this. The older I get, the less I care what people think the less I care. You know, I mean, it is what it is, right? I am who I am. And I walk the talk to the best of my ability, I’m not going to say that I don’t ever need to be reminded. But I do work hard to do what I can to shine a light on what makes me unique, because that’s what I expect from you. That’s what I expect from the people in our shoes linked up program. That’s what I expect from everyone that, you know, that works with us. So I had to do it if I’m never asking you to do it. Right. So let’s talk about this for a second. Like, I mean, it sounds so simple, but it’s really not easy. You got to think about what makes you different. You have to think about what makes you stand out. You know, I first when I first went into business, I taught social media. Well, not when I first learned about when I first went into this version of my business, I guess like 15 years ago, I was teaching online marketing and LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, all the things right. And of course, I had to do, I didn’t know all the things was exhausting, because you don’t know all the things or stay on top of all the things but I found myself bringing people to LinkedIn all the time. So I’m like, You know what, I’m just gonna start teaching LinkedIn strategies what people were asking me to speak about, so I started to to dive to niche and a little bit right now what you might think is okay, but now you’re different than all the other social media speakers. What if somebody wanted to? Like, aren’t you cutting your opportunities in by a lot, right? Because what if somebody wanted a Twitter speaker? What if somebody wants it, you know, now, you’re not going to be put up for those opportunities. But here’s what happened. When somebody needed a social media speaker 100 names would be thrown out and my name would be one of them. But when somebody needed a LinkedIn speaker 10 People would say call Karen, right. So the more I started to beat to my own drum, the more business I got, and then I niched down even further, to really infuse PR into the work I do, because I do think it’s about the brand of you and focusing even more when I started this podcast on supporting women, right? These are the things that make me different than other people that do what I do. Does it make me better? It doesn’t make me worse. It doesn’t make me anything but Different. And then from that place, I built my business, right? Because I want people that resonate with that. Okay, I want people that resonate with that if somebody comes to me, and they’re like, Karen, I want 25 new leads a day, I’m not that person, I am never ever going to be that person. I want people that resonate with, I want to build a brand, I want to build my network, and I want to build my business from that place of ease, not the place of exhaustion of millions of leads, right? That are probably not qualified. So what happens is, I’m attracting the right people to my brand. Does that make sense? I use the example a lot, especially when I speak to realtors, I, you know, you guys, if you’re a realtor, please take if you do this, please tag me and let me know because I want to say this. And you do need to do this, if you are a real estate agent. And you are, let’s just say you’re a Reiki Master. And you bring in a Feng Shui expert to stage a house. And maybe you’re waving sage all over the place. And you’re burying St. Joseph upside down in the soil in the front of the house, right? Put that on your LinkedIn profile, please stand out from all of your competition, because I promise you, somebody’s going to see that and go, I need this person. Right? Like when people there are people that resonate with that, and you are going to stand out from your competition. This is what makes you different, it doesn’t mean you’re gonna get less business short, there’s going to be somebody that says, Don’t call Mary, boy, she’s a little crazy, she comes into my house waving some crazy smoky sage stuff, right? It’s okay, it’s okay, they’re not your people. But there’s going to be so many people that are going to love this, they’re going to love this about you. And that’s what I want to see, I want you to shine a light, I want you to beat to your own drum, because this is where you’re going to get the additional business, because you’re gonna stand out, there’s probably 50 realtors in your town. And you can insert, you know, financial planner, and all the other things that are out there, coach, consultant, right yoga teacher, all of these are out there, stand out, stand out. Because if you don’t stand out, you are lost, and no one is gonna be able to find you. So think about what makes you different. Think about how you want to show up differently than your competition. Again, standing out doesn’t make you better, although I want you to lean into that right doesn’t make you worse, it just makes you stand out. Okay, it just makes you stand out. And then the next thing to do is you have to own it, right? This is where I want it is like be the best. Tell everyone, you’re the best. Tell everyone you’re different and why you’re different. And that you’re proud that you’re different. Give them examples of the feng shui sway and the difference it made in the sale of the house, I can tell you, I was on a call with my mastermind. I just recently moved and I’m in in my new office. And I was like, I don’t know, I don’t like the way this office is set up. And one of the girls in the one of the women in the mastermind is like, alright, like she just started giving me advice. And it feels so much better to be in this place that that when I rearranged my office, I rearranged my desk was rearrange all the things. And she gave me some advice on how to do it, the energy flows differently, I’m working better, I am much more productive. The way that the way that she, she had me set up my office, I wouldn’t have known how to do that, right. But so so if you have examples like that, tell people this, tell them why you’re different. Tell them that you’re proud of being different, and that you’re proud of supporting it. Like for example, I can talk about the fact that I want there to be more wealthy women in the world, I do what I do. So there’s more wealthy women in the world I want more wealthy women have more women with money have more money to donate, they can vote, they can, you know, they can show up, they can make a difference in the world, right? And I am, you know, I am loud and proud about why I do what I do. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t work with men. Because I do write I do work with men, there’s I mean, what I was about half my private clients are men, it doesn’t mean you can’t do the other things. You can’t work with the other people, it means that you’re standing for something you are beating to your own drum. And you are not afraid to tell people that you beat your own drum of what your own drum is all about. And why you like this drum that you’re beating, right? and own it, own it loud and proud. Tell everyone that you’re the best. Nobody’s gonna think you’re better than you say you were nobody’s gonna think you’re different than you say you are. So you have to tell people exactly how you want to be seen. And of course, you know where I think this has to happen, right? It has to happen on your LinkedIn profile. So let me take a minute here to just remind you that this program, this whole podcast is sponsored by she’s linked up, which is our flagship course our choosing the accelerator program. It’s a 12 week program. It’s our flagship course, that we offer primarily to women but we definitely have had men in the program. Like I said, we have private clients as well that are men and what we do in this program As we help you create your brand, and there’s a lot of identity work that’s happening in this program, right? We help you create a brand that makes you different. We help you find the place that makes you different, we help you, we write your LinkedIn profile for you. So that you don’t even have to think about how to say it, we help you say it for you. And then we have you building relationships from that place. With the highest ticket offers that we’ve got available to you if we need to, we need to, we can help you create those high ticket offers.

I want there to be more wealthy women in the world. And my shoes linked up accelerator program is where I make that happen. So if you want to know more about what it looks like to be a part of that, just go to Karen yankovich.com/call, grab a spot on the calendar, and we’ll chat, we’ll see if it’s if it if it is great. If it’s not, that’s cool, too. We’ve got lots of support for people either way, but Karen yankovich.com. And there’s links in the show notes, get to the calendar. Simple call. That’s how you start the process. Alright, so we talked about first you got to think about what makes you different, what makes you stand out. Second, you have to own it loud and proud. The last thing I want to talk about is and this is the piece where I think we get caught up. And I would love for you to tell me if you agree with me, I would love for you to share this episode on social media. And tell me if you agree with me on this next part that I’m gonna talk about here. One of the reasons that I think especially women don’t share what makes them different don’t share that they they’re not as comfortable beating to their own drum isn’t because of the people that don’t know us. It’s the people that do know us, right? Let’s just go back to my realtor example. If you’re a realtor, and you talk about the fact that you’re waving sage, and you’ve got Reiki signs painted behind the walls and all this cool stuff, right? Are you worried about the people you don’t know that see that and go oh, my god, she looks so cool. Call call Mary. She’s the one you gotta call. Now you’re worried about your sister, your brother, your neighbor, your uncle your competition? You’re worried about people you do know, right? That’s who we are worried about when we when we are not comfortable sharing what makes us different? And those are the people writing checks to us. They’re not the people investing in us. They’re not the people hiring us. Right? The people hiring us want to see this. It’s the people that are not hiring us that we worry about yet. We don’t what yet we’re not confident enough to really beat to our own drum. And we’re losing business. We’re losing money, because of the people who are not investing in us. The people that are investing us want to see this stuff, they want to see what makes you different. Okay, so we’ve got to find the courage to be like, I don’t care what anybody thinks this is what I’m doing. This is who I am. And you know, what, if you have to change it, so what? So what if you’re listening to this, chances are you’re an entrepreneur, chances are you got to fail a few times before you find the absolute right way to do things, right. So what I want you to be in a place where you are attracting the exact right people who are investing within you with the highest opportunities so that you are a wealthy woman. Who cares what your neighbor thinks? Who cares? Right? So let’s recap this a little bit. First and foremost, you got to think about what makes you different? Well, let me go back a second. First and foremost, the whole theme of the show, is based on a card that I pulled in my friend Susie mortos, the love card deck and the card is you have permission to beat to your own drum. So how do we do that? When it comes to our business? First, think about what makes you different, what makes you stand out right? Then think about then you got to own it, you got to be loud and proud and be the best and tell everyone that you’re the best and tell them why you’re different. And tell them that you’re proud that you’re different. And then remember, stop worrying about the people we know and what they think about you think about the people that are looking for you they are craving this different that you somebody that stands out that’s different than everybody else out there and be that person so they can find you. And you have to tell people and again, LinkedIn, right? You want to tell them what makes you different, so that they can find you they can hire you. And now you’re building a seriously profitable business. Okay, so if you need my permission, here it is, you have permission to beat to your own drum. So like I mentioned earlier at our she’s linked up program, our goal is to create more wealthy women of influence. It all starts with a call. I gotta tell you, the women in this program are incredible. If you want to hang out with these incredible women, grab a spot on the calendar, Karen yankovich.com/call get you on the calendar.
