Maria is a fellow Jersey girl she lives in New Jersey with her husband Giuseppe, two children, Isabel and Massimo and her dog, Luna. And she loves Italy, fine wine and cooking all things that sound good to me. I’m so happy you’re here today, Maria.

Maria Fontana 2:43
Oh, my God, I’m so happy to Karen, this is great. Thanks for having me. I’m honored.

Karen Yankovich 2:48
Oh, well, if you’re here, Maria and I met through an online group somewhere, I don’t remember how we met. But then we realized we live near each other. And we’re like, oh, my gosh, we can actually meet in person. So we’ve done that a few times, which has been awesome. And it’s good to get to know her. And it’s really interesting. Like, it’s just, it’s there’s so many things about your story that are interesting to me. But one of the things that I love the most about you, I’m just gonna go there right from the beginning. One of the things I loved most about you is you’re like, Karen, I want to be focused on real business owners, real business owners, like real business owners that have profit and loss statements that understand the business, and that are running real businesses. And it took me aback a little bit because, listen, I know that some of our coaches and consultants are running businesses, but they’re kind of almost more like practices than businesses, right? Like it’s a practice if it’s just you, and you’re doing and that’s fine, right? That’s absolutely okay, if that’s your goal. But tell me what you why What brings you to that thought and what you meant by when you when you said that to me.

Maria Fontana 3:46
So what breastfeeds that thought is I came from the brick and mortar space of, you know, 20 years in the brick and mortar space, multiple brick and mortar practices. And when I came online, because people were constantly picking my brain about what I knew and the personal development space and business because that was my expertise in both ends. I found so much bullshit in the online world. Like I was like, wait a minute, is this real? Like I felt like I fell into the Twilight Zone. And I started to question a lot of things and that were going on. So of course when I first came into the online world, because I was new to it. I kind of believed everything that everyone was telling me because I thought oh, well, it’s not the space I’m from so I need to learn this stuff. But I quickly after blowing 1000s and 1000s of dollars on nonsense. Realize, mind you, I did invest in some things that were great. They met great people don’t get me wrong. I did have great mentors. I did find some good people. But a large percentage was just a bunch of hoopla and nothing but what you know, smoke and mirrors. So that’s why as they evolved and grew now I’m in my coaching consulting business about 15 years. I started decipher I’m like wait Minute like, this is a hobby, this is not a business, you’re coming to me for help with or, you know, you’re really just a glorified. I don’t know how to say this. And if anyone gets offended, I’m really sorry, you’re glorified like housewife that your husband’s bankrolling you, and I never understood. And again, I’m not offending anyone. But as a single mom, I was divorced, I raised my kids, I had to start over many times. I just was like, wait a minute, like, this makes no sense to me. So again, I really just connect with the real business owner, meaning like, you really have a business, or you’re really have an executive position, and you really want to work on like up leveling yourself. It’s not like a fantasy business that, you know, a lot of the online space is catering to. And I will question when people throw around their seven and eight figure, you know, numbers online all the time, because it’s vomitus. Like everyone’s sick seven, eight figures. I’m like, I don’t know, in the real business where we kind of never talked about that unless we’re talking to our accountant or the financial planner. So again, I’m not knocking anyone I’m not it’s just my own personal like I do question it coming from a different from a brick and mortar environment.

Karen Yankovich 6:14
Well, you know, it’s interesting, because I hear you were just doing a lot of and I don’t mean to offend anyone. And I don’t mean to offend anyone. But I was the same as you I was a single mom, I was there was nobody but me responsible for keeping the roof over my head, for putting food on my kids plates for making sure I had enough money gas in the car to get where I needed to go, right. And not every online entrepreneur is like that. And that’s okay. It’s not a bad thing. But for me, and that’s one of the reasons why when I like, you know, I stand for I want to be more wealthy women in the world, I wanted to be more I think more women with more money can change the world. And I really want to shift everyone, every woman is listening to this, I want to shift your mindset to you need to be making a baseline of a quarter million dollars a year as an entrepreneur, if you want to put six figures in your bank account. And and you want to put six figures in your bank account, right? It was too damn hard to be an entrepreneur to make $45,000 a year to yourself, right? So because if you’re not if you have a six figure business, you’re probably only bring home maybe 40 or 50,000, which sounds like a lot of money. But guess what, if you are that person that’s responsible for the mortgage and the gas and the cell phone bill and the EZ Pass and all that other stuff, right? Like it’s just not enough money. I so can relate to that I so can relate to that. I distinctly remember a conversation I had with somebody where she was like, and it was years ago, but she was like, you know, she’s a pretty big, pretty big name these days. And she was like, I have a six figure business. And I knew she had like three people that work for her. I’m like, Okay, well, how do you pay them? Like, you have a six figure business? That’s awesome. But like, Would you have any money? Because I can, like I can have if I have a six figure business and I’m paying three people, I’m on food stamps. 20 me like that to be real. This is what happens when you put two Jersey girls on

Maria Fontana 8:06
the same conversation is reality. The conversation is, you know, guess we want to grow wealthy women. Me too. I mean, this is like my mission. Like I’ve lost everything Karen and I, I speak about it. And a lot of people are again, a bunch of bullshit. It’s smoke and mirrors. I am all over the place. I wrote in my books, like, share about it on my podcast myself. I talk about it like I was very well.

Karen Yankovich 8:33
Well tell us about that. But we’ll get right to this conversation. Tell us about your journey.

Maria Fontana 8:37
Right. And I lost everything. So my journey was I started in North Jersey. I was 19 years old and I started my first business I opened a salon, I became a hairdresser in high school. I was brilliant. i My mother wanted me to go to college, I wasn’t having it. I wanted the quickest way to cash and freedom cuz I grew up in a modestly poor, immigrant Italian family. My parents worked really hard. I thought we were poor. I’ll tell you the rest later at the end of the story, you know, hardworking people, blue collar for kids. So I wanted the fastest path to cash. I had three jobs that a high school saved my first $15,000 which in the late 80s was a lot of goddamn money. And I opened my first salon. That salon, I hit six figures back then that was a lot of money. And you know, I excelled I excelled. I was super successful for many, many years. And in real business because I had a great accountant. I had a great financial planner. I had a great attorney. So I learned the real business structures like how my business foundations were structured, how my s corporate structure is how I save money, all this good stuff. Then I wound up getting married, I was older. I was 31 and you know my parents kind of made me feel a lot of pressure to get married because you know, we’re married and have kids but the FBI was like you know all the time mindset. If you did the best they could what they knew how not bashing what they thought that’s just what they thought. So I wanted to get married, married the wrong man wound up in a in a hell of a marriage two kids. That’s when I moved down the shore. I was in North Jersey, I sold my first salon moved down the shore, opened another two salons down here, fell into a tie. I’m really trying to short sword in this in this terrible marriage. And my ex husband had issues gambling stuff, you know, all different kinds of issues. So make a long story short, I want to falling into a severe like depression, I became like, over 300 pounds, I hated my life. And I just started to spiral where here was this empowered, successful young woman that slowly everything was like slipping through my fingers. I had these two kids and, you know, it was like being married to a heroin addict. You know, people say, oh, you know, he had a lot of mental stuff. So big, long story short, so by the time I got divorced, I had, I was in a bad situation. He had, you know, a lot of corruption, a lot of things. So I had lost my home, I lost my business, my credit got destroyed. For a smart, empowered, powerful woman. I got the rug pulled out from under me Now why do I share this, because stuff does happen to us in our journey. And it didn’t, you know, it took me a long time to stop beating the shit out of myself. So I had to pick up my bootstraps with two little kids. And friggin start over. So then I opened a cab company, another salon, a tanning salon, a beauty supply. I just kept going, I kept figuring out, I rebuilt my credit. And then I got into the coaching and consulting space, because people were constantly asking me to things, how I did the business stuff, and how I got the hell out of that black hole and 360 myself by doing all the inner work. So here I am.

Karen Yankovich 11:55
Wow, wow, that’s so cool. And now, right. That’s, that’s so awesome. It’s so awesome. And it is, it’s so interesting, because, you know, like I said earlier, entrepreneurial ism is not for the faint of heart. You know, it is not hard. I mean, listen, I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. But I’m not gonna lie that I don’t sometimes fantasize about paychecks and benefits and, you know, pensions, and you know, and listen, hopefully, what but what we have as entrepreneurs is the ability to really create wealth, and real income. And, and that’s what you have done. And that’s what you do for your clients now. Right? So I think we so so when you got started, I feel like, and I’m gonna say this, this is not true, let me know. But when you got started, you were mostly helping other salon owners, right, like people that were in the salon industry. And you’re still really well known as a coach in the salon industry, right?

Maria Fontana 12:46
Yes. So when I started out what happened was, I started out people picking my brains. So it was a combination of, you know, someone had helped with the personal development. And I had also gotten certified as an integrative healing practitioner. So hypnosis, guided imagery, all these things, because I have a passion for it. And I am as well

Karen Yankovich 13:05
as entrepreneurs do, this is what we do.

Maria Fontana 13:08
Yeah, I’m multi passionate, and I own it. And I believe you can be really good if you just own your magic. So I started helping people and it was all service based people, there was a lot of salon industry, people, salon owners, spa owners, wellness practitioners, holistic practitioners, just because that was the circle of old school relationships I was in, you know, from being an educator when I was younger, to just again, building those relationships. So once I started coaching and consulting those relationships, people just referred me out that I started to take some of my money. And for tax purposes, I started investing in real estate with my brother, we started a company. And then I bought a few properties in Italy. So you know, one thing led to the next but it goes to show you you really can do anything you want, even though it might be hard, but you can. And then it the end of the story that I got my first love from Italy by Joseph B. He came back into my life and we wound up getting married in our old age, and we’re together now 10 years. So it’s, you gotta believe in love and all that good stuff. As corny as it sounds, you know, you really can.

Karen Yankovich 14:19
I just want to take a minute here and remind you that the kinds of relationships that Maria and I built with each other are there for you. The crux of everything I do is how do you need the kinds of people that can change your business, change your life and change your bank balance forever. And I do that I teach that in our shoes linked up program. It’s a 12 week program. That is just our goal is for you to create, market and sell a high ticket offer. By the end of the 12 weeks. We use relationships. To do that. We look to book your calendar. I don’t care how many eyes are on your content. I care how many appointments are on your calendar, and if you want that to be two a week That’s cool. If you want that to be 22 a week. That’s cool, too. It’s custom designed to your needs. We also build in publicity to everything we teach, because I believe that that strategy helps you have the credibility to land those higher ticket offers. Our goal for everyone in the program is that they’ve landed a high ticket contract and a media hit and know how to do more of that on the other side of the 12 weeks. So if you want to know what that looks like, just grab a spot on our calendar, you go to Karen yankovich.com/call, get you on the calendar. And you’re on your way to building kinds of relationships that Maria and I built, that I promise you are profitable for both of us on a consistent basis. And I want that for you, too.

Maria Fontana 15:46
So now I’m helping people Yeah, again, service, mostly service space and executives, I have find to do more of a high performance coach at this point, because I just found that US Hi Youtubers, as entrepreneurs, executives, all the people who are trying to get things done, a lot of it is you need to do the inner work. And that’s where my lies. So yeah, that’s really where I’m focusing today is the inner work, being enough, learning how to be Covey enough except yourself, love yourself, truly tap into your intuition, emotional intelligence, which means reading the room, you know, being able to have a heartfelt conversation, being able to connect with people. So these are the core now of what I’m doing, because it really inspires me and I see such transformation, you know, the business, I did that for 10 years, it was amazing. But the entrepreneurs on the other end, and even the executives who came to me or corporate, anyone who came to me what amount of general personal development stuff,

Karen Yankovich 16:46
that’s a big part of it. So I can I can give, I can give strategy day in and day out. But if you don’t do the work, all the strategy in the world isn’t gonna get you where you want to go. I know. And it’s, it’s there’s a nosy people listening to this. And there’s friends of mine that I’m thinking of right now that is gonna be like, Oh, that’s like, but it’s so true. Like, there’s, you know, it’s interesting, I did a hearing in New Jersey, I went to a networking meeting this morning, which I haven’t done in forever and beautiful women that were there. And every single one of them were thinking too small, every single one of them were like when they say what would be you know, what would you like to get from this? They’d be like, Well, I would like one client who wants to buy my pen? And I’m like, no, no, you want to find one client that wants to buy 100,000 of your pens. You know what I mean? Like, think a little bit bigger. And that’s not strategy. That’s mindset, right? That’s mindset that’s thinking bigger, I like to call it flipping the funnel, like thinking about the bigger opportunities. First, I mean, the time you spent to get in your car, drive to this networking meeting, and spend an hour or two there and then drive home that time alone, right there isn’t worth you being there to get somebody to buy one of your pens. Right.

Maria Fontana 17:49
But it is Karen. It’s a bottom line that I’ve learned from working with like very intense mentors on the whole energies base and the mindset and the psychology. It all comes rooted in one thing, not feeling good enough, right? And women, as caregivers, as women, there’s that like looming thing like that. And when you don’t feel good enough, you don’t feel motivated. When you don’t feel good enough, you don’t show up in your power. When you don’t feel good enough, you don’t get the sales. It’s that underlying thing. That’s where my magic lies with intuitively helping people get past that, like break past that. Because listen, when I weighed 320 pounds for me, and I felt like I was trapped inside my skin, I saw everything crumble around me, I had to cut this shit, do the work and get out of it. Or Guess what? I was doing myself a disservice and my kids a disservice. And I’m like, a tough Jersey girl. But you know, it’s so hard when you see things crumbling around you. You’re like, this is not what I plant. How could this happen to me and you start beating yourself up. So I tell my clients, put the god damn that down. Put the back down, stop beating the shit out of yourself with this bag. Right? So you know that to me, like I get so passionate wild about this? Because do you notice. I mean, that’s what that’s what gets me because people like the transformation that my clients get is so profound. And now I was on the call this morning with a woman she’s can’t disclose. She’s a high level executive for one of the biggest medical conglomerates in New Jersey. And she’s brilliant. But her biggest struggle doesn’t feel good enough. Because she doesn’t feel good enough she loses focus because she loses focus. She starts going into anxiety. It’s it’s a whirlwind of things one thing leads to another so she’s really getting some major breakthroughs. And just in the first week, she made some major shifts by changing habits changing things that she’s doing daily, the way she talks to herself. I mean, there’s a lot to this, but these are just like the quick results. stuff that, you know, I see in it, it makes me happy. Because at the end of the day, you want everyone to be happy, wealthy in a place of abundance and joy, man, it’s not like a bunch of woowoo stuff, it this is real life. This is real life.

Karen Yankovich 20:15
It’s social. And, you know, traditionally, there’s this, like, there’s this like, underlying concept that women are Catty, and they want to tear each other down. And I find the complete opposite to be true, or at least in circles, I hang out. And if you’re not finding that you’re certainly you’re hanging out the wrong surface. Because I think that, I think that it’s so easy for us to take on, I mean, we do so much, right, we do so much. And it’s so easy for us to take on, you know, take on the distress of not being enough and not having enough and not doing enough and not whatever, and we clearly want to I know 100%, when that would have happened to me, I’m doing it to myself, like there was nobody in my life saying you’re not doing enough, you know, like nobody. And that’s why I think that we need to get ourselves out of it and get ourselves in a place where we’re we’re with other people that are helping lift us up and thinking bigger, and I think, you know, the community aspect to the work that I do the work that you do, I think that that’s a huge part of it. Even just like, first of all, having a mentor right is amazing. And I will never until the day I die not have a mentor, you know, I mean, I will have a coach or somebody that I work with that, that is always pushing me to do better. You know, and, and it doesn’t matter what I think I’m hiring them for, there’s always a piece of that in there, right? If I hire a coach to, you know, teach me how to make potato chips, somehow there’s a life lesson about, you know, being whatever. But, but, but here’s the other thing I want, I want to point out, not only are you doing that for your clients, you did that for yourself, but you did it for yourself in a way that you are living your best life. Like we talked like you talked about in your bio, that you love Italy and fine wine and cooking, but you have gone out and got clients in Italy, you’re like, No, no, I like Italy. I’m going to Italy, I’m gonna work with people in Italy, and this is what I’m going to make happen. And, and so how did you do that? How did you like take this jersey based hair salon, you know, network that you had, and expand it out to be something worldwide?

Maria Fontana 22:10
Well, first of all, I’m bilingual. And I never, you know, really monetized on that I never really talked about it much. So when I started my coaching consulting business, I actually, I’ll just backtrack, how I built my coaching consulting business from the ground up was I took old school, gold school strategies, you know, business relationships, and I started reaching out to people, and I did it with video because I do love being on camera. I love I think it’s the hairdresser in me, I love, I almost want to touch everybody, I almost want to just look in your eyes and connect with you. Like I really feel that soul connection. So what I did was, I would share video, I started a YouTube channel podcast, I would share Facebook Lives, I just went balls to the wall doing video like I started like 15 years ago. And I started actually sharing actually in with Italian too. So I started making videos speaking Italian for another a tiny group of salon and spa owners that I had created. So this is going back 15 years. And that’s how people started following me and started reaching out to me. So what I did was I signed up my first I had people reach out and then I just created VIP clients VIP days in Italy. So when I go I book in the client, um, I have a lot of holistic practitioners in Italy that work with me, I have two attorneys actually, that wanted to change careers, and they just didn’t know how to do the inside work to switch out and spa owners. I think I said that. And you know, it’s amazing, because I just put it out there. And there again, it’s thinking bigger, like, you don’t have to think bigger on things that don’t align with you. But I was like, wow, I’d love to have some clients in Italy. I did it. I just reached out people reached out to me, it’s really aligning yourself in that energy. What do you want to be? What do you want your life to look like? And really doing it. But you have to do all the inner work, Karen to get rid of all the stuff that’s holding you back. Because otherwise you just keep doing what’s familiar and once familiar winds up being our whole life is gone. And you wake up one day, you’re like What the eff that I do, like, All

Karen Yankovich 24:19
right, so how do you get started with people now if people want to know more about like if they’re loving Maria’s energy, and they want to learn more about what it looks like to hang out with Maria and to really get this kind of inspiration? Where do they start?

Maria Fontana 24:31
Yeah, where are they start? So basically, I just say book a call with me. It’s a 10 minute get acquainted call if you want to know if like working together is a good fit. And I’m all over social media. I’m sure it’s gonna be in the show notes. I put everything on LinkedIn. I’m on Instagram. I’m on Tik Tok too, because I do like making videos and it’s fun and just connect with me. I do my own my assistant books, my appointments, but I’m the one that gets on the phone. I talk to you because I really believe in that human connection. And that’s the best way I love just meeting people and connecting and seeing if I can support you.

Karen Yankovich 25:06
Awesome. Awesome. And what if they just wanted to so they can follow you on social media? Um, tell us about your books.

Maria Fontana 25:11
Okay, so I have four books I wrote to hit best seller and two did not. But I’ll tell you why. Because the second to hit bestseller because I hired someone to publish them. So this is the other stuff no one talks about, I’m going to talk about it. Right, the father to the first who I wrote, were really I wrote Love and Light. It was basically my journal of my healing journey of going for therapy and how I wound up on the other side of the darkness. I wrote business as a spiritual thing, which really talks about bringing energy and spirituality, not religion, energy and spirituality into your business and making it better. And then I wrote creating joy and creating impact, which are multi author books that you participate in, get publicized, they hit bestseller, I call a spade a spade, I don’t pull punches, I tell it like it is. So they’re all on Amazon. So you could just hit Amazon Maria Fontanne and find them all there. But there’s a my Lincoln bio, which you’re going to find in the show notes. I do give away free copies. So if you want a digital copy, just head on over, give me your email, and I’ll send you a copy of your book.

This is timeless marketing, like people on the phone, who’s on your calendar, right? Like who’s on your calendar? Like, that’s where the big opportunities come? And and how did you, you know, how did you What is your what is your credibility look like? And is it real? And how do we make it real? Like, how do we create? How do we create this and shine a light on it, because it is the world that we live in? We have to do that. So awesome. Well, thanks for being here. I just

want to make a quick closing statement for everyone. Anyone listening, I want you to remember, your self worth is in your soul. Don’t get blindsided by things you see focus on what is important to you. Because what’s important to you might not be what’s important to the other person. And wealth is a state of mind and wellbeing. So create that joy, that wealth and abundance so you can show up in your best self because you’re only here once and all our days are numbered, folks.
