About the Episode:

Sometimes, having to change and make shifts in your business can feel like failure, but it’s not! That’s just the life of a full-time entrepreneur. If something isn’t working or it’s time to make something better… shift! Here’s why and how you should shift:

  1. What makes your heart sing? What’s your big business plan? If what you’re doing doesn’t make you happy or isn’t achieving your goals, it’s time to make a shift.
  2. Lay out your path. When you lay out the path to success for your life and your business, think big! If you’re not thinking big, you’re not on the right path.
  3. Listen and learn. As you travel on the path you’ve set, listen and learn. What suggestions do your clients have? What is and isn’t working? Take everything into consideration so you can make good, educated shifts toward success.

Having to shift how you do things isn’t failure. It’s refining your path to success. Learn to embrace change, and you’ll be achieving your goals in no time!

I love getting your messages. So you can check that out. I Karen Yankovich comm slash 175. So this this is a topic that I was talking about last week in my shoes linked up program. We were having a call I don’t remember what the conversation was about. But it seemed like a message that that you know, I think actually somebody in the program said this is a good podcast topic. I was like you know what you are? right it is. And what we were talking about was the need to be open to the shift in your business. Right. So if you’re a longtime listener, then you know a lot about my journey, right? Absolute roller coaster to success, right? Not a ladder, no straight ladder with lots of craziness. I wouldn’t give any of it up. But okay, the drama could I could live without some of the drama, but I you know, just a lot of craziness. I started out, you know, working for the phone company. And then I owned a small company that we were telecommunications consultants, right. And then I signed on one of my, when we sold that company, one of my clients hired me, it just it just was crazy, right? It was just crazy. And it just is I actually recently was driving through I went to when I went that was trying to say college is now the College of New Jersey. And I was in that area recently. So I drove around the college campus wondering like what 18 year old Karen would think of 60 year old Karen. And like nothing, none wouldn’t have predicted almost any of this right? Like wouldn’t have rejected any of it. It was actually a really cool experience, if you have the opportunity to do something like that. I highly, highly recommend it. It was really cool. It was a really cool experience. Anyway, definitely not anything I could have predicted. And the other thing that I think is important, as we talked about the story as we talk about the shifts in our business, and we’re focusing this mostly on entrepreneurs, right, but certainly it could be a paycheck as well. But as an entrepreneur, those shifts also sometimes shift your income. Right? So you know, I mean, if you guys I have a, you know, very supportive family, also very, you know, they have their pensions and paychecks and, you know, lots of great benefits, and they just don’t get when I’m like I don’t have I have to figure out health benefits, right? As an entrepreneur, so. So even as you’re shifting this while you’re having support, sometimes it’s from people that don’t really get what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. And it’s not wrong, right. It wasn’t wrong when I closed my business back, you know, in the cod in the 90s, I guess or maybe 2000. It was around 2000 wasn’t wrong, it was the thing to do at the time. It seemed crazy, right? But it was it wasn’t wrong. That’s what entrepreneurs do. Right? It’s, it was the season for that enterprise was what had come to an end. Right. So I needed to shift, I needed to shift. Can I continue to beat that dead horse? Right? Which is horrible. It’s a horrible analogy, right? As I say it. You know, I don’t know, I certainly wouldn’t be enjoying myself. I’m enjoying myself right now. Right? So can you relate to this? Can you can you find yourself like trying to defend even to yourself, sometimes, whatever it is you’re doing, or more importantly, when you’re seeing a need to shift, you know, maybe to the people in your life maybe to your spouse, maybe to your partner, maybe again even to yourself, like is it really it does this really make sense? You know, here’s the thing. Yes, yes, yes, you have to be focused, yes, you have to be focused. And also, you have to got, you got to be open to the shifts, you can do both, you can be focused, and be open to the shifts. Okay? If you weren’t sure about that, this is me telling you, you’ve got permission to stay focused, but also shift, you know, make some simple shifts, so that you’re on the path to success. So let’s talk a little bit about the steps I think that that I’d like you to make to kind of start to be to prepare your career, your business, your your life, for this journey of shifts, right. So the first thing that you need to do and this is the first thing that I do when I work with anybody, whether it’s privately or in marches linked up accelerator program, the first thing that happens, and this is maybe my favorite call of all of the calls that I get to do with people, and that is, what’s your big dream? What’s your big dream for your business? What’s your big dream for your career? What is it? And I want to know, like, what one thing is not a million things? Yes, you can have multiple streams of income, right? But in this particular case, I want you to be focused, right? So is it you know, if you’re a coach, is it a coaching client? What does that coaching client look like? How many How long? Do you work with that coaching client? What is it worth to you? Right? What is that opportunity? Is it a VIP day? Is it over six months? Like but again, I’m, I want you to dream big, like, I have a magic wand. Okay? This is not like how this is gonna happen. Just know that if you have, you know, maybe you’re coaching them on an island, right? I don’t care, whatever it is, I want you to dream big. So what is that big dream? What is that big? When, right? When you get a contract for that, you’re gonna be like, this is what I wanted, right? So I want to know, we have to know what that is first, so that we can reverse engineer everything so that you can get it right. And I want it to be something that makes your heart sing, right? Not that I’m you know, hiring 10 more people, even though I really don’t love having to manage 10 people, because then I can work less, that’s not what I want, I want, I want a big dream, a big win a big contract that you land that absolutely lights you up and make your heart sing. That’s the very first thing you need to do. As you create a business or a career or a life that is open to the shifts. First, we need to know what the path is right? versus we need to know what the path is. And now, now that we know what it is, we have to certain layout that path, right? We have to lay out that path. Okay? So now that let’s just say it’s a coaching client, and if you recognize yourself, I’m certainly not gonna use any names. But I spoke to someone the other day who is recently got our coaching certificate. And she was talking about having two calls of like a call every other week with our coaching clients. And she wanted 10 calls a week, total of 20 coaching clients, and it was I think, 20 $500. And first of all, it’s just not enough money, the math doesn’t work on that, right? The math doesn’t work on that. 20 $500 for six months, okay, so two or 20 $500 for six months times 10. That’s $25,000. That’s 50 that like, that’s the math doesn’t work on it. That’s just too many clients to get to 100k. Right. And 100k, you’ve all heard me say this a million times, is not enough money as an entrepreneur. You know, if that’s your big dream, you need help you need me to help you dream bigger. Right? So basically what I said to her that so even though you thought that that was your dream, the math doesn’t work the path to get from here to there. Like I don’t see it. I don’t see it working. So So we talked about things like what if, first of all, what if you doubled your prices and cut your number of clients in half? It’s not that, you know, you can still do to call every other week, but now instead of having to have 20 clients, that you’re trying to remember what the heck is going on with them, right? Because you want to be there to support them. You’re a coach for six months with them. You need to remember they’re on vacation, how old their kids are all that stuff, right? It’s hard to do that when you have 20 clients. Right? So what if 10 What have you had 10 clients, but that same amount of money? Right off the bat right now you’re like, does that feel more spacious and expansive? Right? That’s the first shift, right? You’ve got your coaching certificate, and you’re like, Alright, well, maybe you need to shift, right? Maybe you need to shift and and say I need to increase the investment. Because then I can, I can get to know them better. I know you’re a good coach, but you can be a better coach for 10 max clients and 20 max clients. I don’t anybody that thinks that’s not true. I want to I’d love to have this conversation on my podcast. So reach out to me and let’s, let’s do it. Let’s have that conversation here on the on the show. Here’s the other thing. People love the idea of fast success. So what if you front load that six month contract with a VIP day? So you’re like, Listen, we can take three months to get you from step a to step B or we can get you from step a to step B in month one, right with a VIP day and then we have six months behind it to really act This work right now, that path right now you’re talking about dream opportunities. I know you love your coaching clients, and by the way, insert whatever else you do, right? I know you love your coaching clients, imagine if you had had more opportunity to dive deep with them, right? Imagine if you added a retreat to this, right? Like, this is what I want you to do, I want you to lay out the path to get there. And I need you to check out and make sure the math works. And honestly, as an entrepreneur, that math needs to get you to at least a quarter million dollars a year. Because if it’s not getting you to that your dream is number one, your dream isn’t big enough. And number two, you’re paying out so much money in, you know, taxes and and all of your things that you buy, right zoom costs and all that stuff, right? It’s not, it’s not the same as when you had a paycheck where they paid for all that right, they the man paid for all that, you have to pay for all that. So if $100,000 it’s not enough, it’s just not enough. And again, we’re dreaming big here, right? If you’re like I am, I’m looking for people to dream big. Now, if you’re telling me that you have a full time job, you’re doing this on the side, that’s different. If you’re telling me you’re retired, and you want a couple clients to keep you keep yourself busy. I’m cool with that, too. But if you’re telling me that this is a full time gig for you, and you really want to be able to help your clients, whatever that looks like, the math has to work for it to be your big dream. Okay, so there’s already you’re starting to see where we might need to start, make some shifts, okay. And then the third thing here is, and this is the most important thing, as you do this work, you need to listen and learn as you move forward. And as you as you move forward, you need to be open to the shifts, you need to be open when somebody is saying something like maybe they would have been interested in a VIP day at the front end of that, because they would have had fast action, and then been able to move forward. Right, you need to be open to what people are saying. So that you can shift things. I’ll give you an example in my program, and my shoes linked up program. Initially, we it was more of a digital program. And one of the first things that I realized was people were getting stuck on the write your own profile piece. Here’s how you write your LinkedIn profile. And people were getting stuck. So I had, so I listened. I’m like, Where are people not like they weren’t getting past module two, right? Because nobody wants to write their own profile, they’re a great coach or yoga teacher or, you know, whatever it is that they do, right author, whatever, they’re not a writer necessarily is certainly not able to write about themselves. So I made a shift. And I said, Okay, we’re gonna start to write your book and write your profile for you. Now, what did that mean? It meant I had a higher profile writer, it meant I had to increase the investment. Right? It meant I had a shift on a bunch of different things. But here’s the thing, my students started to have faster success. So it was a win win win, right? I mean, I If you had told me 10 years ago, that I was going to even 10 years, even five years ago, maybe that I was going to have a LinkedIn program specifically focused on women that talked about things like your power, shocker, so that you’re stuck, you know, that you’re, you’re creating, you know, a brand, and you’re leaning into your solar plexus chakra, or that had a module, a video on every single module about mindset, so that you are thinking as big as your aspirations, right? That your body and your mind are in line with your aspirations. If you had told me I was going to do that with my strategy course, I would have said you were crazy that people wouldn’t didn’t want that. But guess what people did want that. And when I started doing it, when I started listening to what my people asked for, and pulled in what I’m what I’m passionate about, right? what I’m good at, Holy moly, is it more fun, it’s so much more fun, right is so much more fun to be able to build all that stuff in. Because I opened my mind. I listened and I learned what my students were looking for. And then I’m like, Alright, let’s try it. You know, if you’ve been listening to the show for years, you know that years ago, I had a front end membership program called the triple your best club. And I loved it. I loved the students. I missed the students to this day. But you know what, I had to let it go. I had to let it go. Because Because I was listening and learning. And it didn’t serve them the way I that I the way I was hoping it would serve them. It didn’t serve my business, which meant it didn’t serve me. Right. So I had to shift. So is that a failure? Maybe? Maybe, is it fail? I guess, right. I’m not doing it anymore. You know, but here’s the thing. It was absolutely the end of that season. So I had to shift, right? I had to have the confidence to shift to a new paradigm. Right? And a new paradigm that might have that meant that I needed to increase my prices right. That front end membership was a lot was was ridiculously inexpensive. And it did like again, it didn’t serve anybody. When people weren’t investing enough money. It was like throw away money, right? So I had to have confidence. To say, you know what, this is not, this is not working, this is not working. Right. So I had to listen and learn from what I was doing, and then shift. So could you talk about these shifts as mistakes? Can you talk about these shifts as failures? You absolutely can, right? I don’t particularly think that makes a difference. Right? Like, but but the point here is, is that you, I had a path, right, I had a path, I laid out that path and the path included that program, and then I listened. And I learned and I’m like, you know what, this isn’t working the way I thought it was gonna work. So I need to shift, right? It is okay, to do that it is okay to do that. So let’s recap this a little bit. First, you need to know what the big dream is, right. And the big dream is not necessarily, you know, I mean, yeah, if you’ve got a product or service, if you’ve got something that you want to serve corporations with that, you know, you’re looking for groups of 50 people, and it’s going to be $50,000. Like, that’s cool. Write that. And if you’re doing that a couple times a year, and that’s your big win. I love that, right? You kind of get but you got to get clear on what it is, you got to make sure it’s something that makes your heart sing. Because if you’re doing all this work, let’s make sure we’re doing something we love to do, right. And then once you know what that big dream is that big win is that contract that is going to make you jump up and down. Now you got to start to lay out the path to get there. Right. And you know, if the math doesn’t work to get you to at least $250,000 a year, if you’re an entrepreneur, and if you’re doing this full time, then you need to relook at it. You need to relook at the path is not going to work. Now, that’s where the first shifts might need to start happening. Right? If the math doesn’t work, that’s where you need to start making some shifts. And then the most important thing is to listen and learn, listen, and learn and be willing to make those shifts so that that ladder that you had aren’t here’s what I’m I laid it out in January, here’s what I’m gonna do it. And I do this, by the way, right? I laid out January. And here’s what I’m going to do. And here’s how many of this I’m going to get. And then something comes up and I’m like, Hmm, maybe I don’t want to do it like that. Maybe I want to do it like this. So you can be a little left of center, from that ladder that you built in January to get you to where you want to go right? As long as you recognize it. You acknowledge it, and then you’re open to the shift. Right? I mean, maybe it’s failing, but it’s failing forward. Right? It’s failing forward. And I honestly don’t even think it’s failing. I think it’s just, I think it’s just the life of an entrepreneur, right? I think it’s just the life of an entrepreneur. But here’s the thing, when you do this, you start to end up, you end up in the most amazing place that even exceeds your wildest dreams, because you were open to the shifts you open to the heart. What if I do this instead of that, right, the most amazing place, I had a team, we have a team meeting every Friday. And we had a team meeting this past Friday. And honestly, I just looked at the women on this call. And I was like, How lucky are Am I how lucky are all of us that are on this call, that I have this amazing, amazing group of people that work for me, amazing group of World Class coaches that helped my students in the program. And to be honest, what happens on every one of those Friday calls, is that at least one person says is taught we because what we do is we talk about where our students are in the program and what you know what’s going on. Right? That’s part of what we’re do every Friday, we connect on that. And at least one person every Friday says the people in this program are unbelievable. So not only do I have amazing people on my team, I have amazing, brilliant women in my program, in my business is in the most amazing place that I never could have dreamed of. Because I was open to the shifts. And I hope the Edit edit, tell me just tell you, it takes it takes courage. It takes a lot of courage to do this. But I hope you know that I’m here to support you. Right and that you have other people around to support you so that you can, you know kind of say all right, I got this I got this and I’m going to do this and this is going to be amazing and I am going to end up in a most amazing place that I couldn’t have even it even exceeded your wildest dreams. And as we’re recording this, we’re right smack in the middle of the Olympics. So tell us about that. Tell us how tell us about what it was like to be a competitive figure skater.

Cydney Mar 4:32
Oh, my goodness, I loved being a skater. First of all, I started skating when I was six years old. And my dad always wanted me to kind of get on my own two feet. Didn’t matter what I was doing. So we had gone to Toronto. And there was a big family reunion and one of the things the my family does is skate together. So it was like Okay, let’s go skate. And dad was like, here’s some skates and he was zooming around. On the rink with the rest of his, you know, brothers and sisters, and you know, all of the kids, and I was hanging on to the rails going, you know, like help, you know, but he never baby me and was like, come on, you can do it. And then, you know, we I guess after the few weeks we were in Toronto, we went home and he said, you want to learn how to skate? And I said, Yes. And I just took to the ice, like a duck does to water. I just loved it. And so my parents always encouraged me it was up at 430 in the morning, it was get your skates ready have breakfast, at five o’clock, there was you know, Go brush your teeth. And then at 515 it was someone was picking you up to take you to the rink for six 6am class. And my whole life ended up being around skating, and then making sure that I got to school on time. And most of the kids who were skating like that, were told we better keep up our grades. Otherwise, we couldn’t skate anymore. And so I learned to talking about work life balance, to be able to skate six or eight hours a day, as well as still keep up my grades still make sure that I got all my tests in on time be really organized, and still go out dancing with my friends as I got older.

Karen Yankovich 6:26
Awesome. That’s so fun. I you know, it’s, as you were saying that story I was thinking about I have four kids, and the older three are boys and my youngest is a girl. And you know, they were all raised by the same parents, you know, like there was not, you know, so we can talk about nature and nurture, and men and women and whatever. And I remember, my kids didn’t Well, we lived on a lake. So they I skated a lot. But I remember being in a roller rink one time with my daughter when she was probably five. And she just kept falling, but she’d fall and get up and fall and get up and I was like, This is completely different than my boys who would fall and go, this is terrible. I can’t do this. This sucks. Like she was just like, I was like, I was blown away. So much so that she’s like 28 years old. And I still remember that moment. You know that because it is a lot. It’s a you’re taking their legs out from underneath of you. Right? So what a big deal that is for you as a five year old to, to just say I’m going to put skates on. Do you still skate?

Cydney Mar 7:15
You know, but only for fun? Because Yeah, since that I changed my career because I thought I was going to be a skater forever. And never, as we were talking about I was on the national team. I wasn’t Canadians. And at 18 a, one of the other competitors skated into me and almost severed my leg, I had my what I call my first near death experience, my was slashed open, I was bleeding out, my coach saved my life. 45 minutes later, the ambulance is there. So if he had not been what was literally a human tourniquet on my leg, I would have died. Because as you well know, 10 minutes of serious bleeding means you’re dead hon. So, you know, I was in the hospital, they did the emergency surgery, they kept testing my leg. It was the late 70s By that time, and there was no micro neurosurgery is being done in Canada. So my doctor arranged for five American doctors to be flown up to Vancouver. And they basically totally reconstructed my leg. And that is the reason that I have two legs right now why I can walk, why I can still dance. I don’t have perfect plantar action. But which means that I can’t push off on my right leg as well as I can on my left leg. And, you know, I had to learn how to take what made me a great skater, and transform that into life lessons that I could use into what was going to be my next career. And I was just really lucky that not only did I have a brilliant coach, he saved my life. And he taught me how to approach life as opposed to just being a competitive figure skater. Now if you didn’t time competitive figure skater I probably would have died, like rolled over and died. But as a person who was taught how to go on and how to have a different life, I was able to really jumpstart my fashion career life and that was that was amazing. And I couldn’t understand how I had been able to just really capture everything and become so successful so quickly because it 2021 I was already winning awards in New York. I already started my new company. I was being accepted in couture and being shown with our money and you know, we’ll go boss and and all of the top Canadian And designers, and it was fabulous. So I really had a head start by having 12 years in skating and understanding what is going on in, you know, life to make it bigger, better.

Karen Yankovich 10:13
Right? Yeah. So is that when you started to move then into the fashion world?

Cydney Mar 10:17
Yes. Well in skating, first of all, I had to do all of my own costumes. And Wally. Wow. So Well, I didn’t have to, but I loved it. And so her way out of a paper bag. So I, at 13, I started making my own outfits. And, you know, one of the skating mums taught me and she said to my Mom, don’t worry, just give her scraps and, you know, give her you know, some remnants let her wreck them. I didn’t wreck anything. And I learned how to sew fell in love with it, started creating all of my own costumes, not only for competition, but learning how to be expressive, like if it was Prokofiev. It was in that more, you know, rambunctious feeling. If it was Rachmaninoff, it would have been, you know, more powerful if it was afternoon of a faun, it would have been more ethereal. So what were the colors? What was the shape? What was the sensibility? And then when we went into the shows, whether or not it was something by Barbra Streisand, then maybe it was a vibrant read. And, and so I started cool. It was so fun. So fun. Really, I loved it.

Karen Yankovich 11:28
So yeah, talking about reinventing yourself, right. So talk about reinventing yourself. So

Cydney Mar 11:33
what does skating have to do with being an international fashion designer? Yeah, right. The the takeaway is that, if I if I had been, like, someone who maybe didn’t think they had any skills, but what if I had already done whether or not it was being a housewife at home? Man, she’s got skills. She knows how to run a house. She knows how to get the kids out the door. She knows that. I mean, a schedule all of those appointments. Those are life skills that are amazing, right?

Karen Yankovich 12:04
Yeah, absolutely. So then you bet you when we met, it was in a business group A few years ago, and you had a product based business then. So tell us about the next evolution of the reinvention of Cydney Mar?

Cydney Mar 12:19
Well, what happened for me was I had a second near death experience. Okay, so at the time, that wasn’t at the time when I joined the business group, I had, I still had my design business. And then what happened? Yeah, that was in 2012. I still had my design studio. But what happened Karen, was I had a second near death experience. I had an illness. I mano about when you’re at the time, I was 54, because I’m a tender 62 now my darling, I’m right behind you. And what happened was, my hair fell out. I was two months in the hospital, it crashed my immune system, my hair fell out. And, uh, yeah, I had, like, 35% left of my hair. It was like, I’m extremely horrible. And, and I was still contracted to QVC to appear live. I didn’t want to wear a wig. I didn’t want to have extensions. My hair wasn’t strong enough to put extensions in. And I didn’t want to take pharma meds. And so my natural path created a formula sit here, try this. And it works so well. And you know, we’re talking about my fabulous hair.

Karen Yankovich 13:31
I mean, I wish I should I’m going to I’m going to take a quick screenshot so I can show that even though I was terrible, cuz I just came from the gym. But her I mean, she’s absolutely I just began the zoom to do this. I was like, your hair is gorgeous. I mean, it really is truly gorgeous.

Cydney Mar 13:43
It’s like amazing that it’s, you know, so strong and healthy. And it grows fast. And I’m blessed. And so when it started working so well, I said, Oh, I have to all the women in the world who are men, you know, who want to have really glorious hair. I mean, what does today expect of us, they want us to show up, they don’t want us to feel uncomfortable and not feel like yourself. And so I started creating Sydney Mar wellness, which is my high end vitamins and supplements. And I made it really easy peasy for people to understand what it was. Because I what I realized is that there’s so much to know that I didn’t want the complex formulations to be confusing to people. So the name of each of the products like the one that you and I were just talking about for hair is called fabulous Hair, Skin and Nails. Oh, I need that. If you need something for yourself, it’s happy cells. If it is something for your liver, it’s love your liver if it’s you know, so it’s kind of really easy to navigate. Oh, that that’s the name that’s what it’s for. So just go off into the wild blue yonder takes them and carry on your merry way.

Karen Yankovich 14:54
So Sydney the over ever entrepreneur, yeah has this personal experience and your turn to into another revenue stream for your business for your company for your business. Yes, exactly, exactly. That’s awesome. So we were talking before the show, and really, that’s why I wanted to have her on here because she really just, I mean, I love that you just you have the, you just go for it, and you make it happen and you make it happen successfully. And I know now that you know, from having that product business, you are really, in many circles, the go to person to help people with their product businesses.

Cydney Mar 15:26
Right? It’s It’s so funny because I anytime anyone says the product word, I basically get tagged and they’re like, Ah, yeah, you got to talk to Sydney, you know?

Karen Yankovich 15:36
Yeah, yeah. Cuz you’ve done such a good job with it. So we talked about this earlier. And we said, we talked about it on the show, I have started to use Sydney’s products a couple months ago, I guess. And at the time, listen, I you know, I have thin hair, but I have a lot of hair still. But it falls out constantly. And I do have decent nails. But you know what, these are things like as you get older, it doesn’t get better. Right? So I said, Let me try the hair, skin and nails. And at the time, I did get the love your liver also, because what Sidney said was try to get get them both. So my question to you, when will explain to me why you say they work better why they work well together?

Cydney Mar 16:09
Well, as we were saying, when we’re talking about, you know how the products work, I said, Gee, you know, if you know you’re a lady of a certain age, you know, once we start getting I’m going to say anywhere from 40s and up or even some of my younger clients who are having hormone issues, because let’s let’s face it, if you’re taking Tylenol, if you’re taking any form of meds, if you’d like to enjoy cocktail hour, you’re kind of challenging your liver. And not all of us think about taking care of our liver and our poor liver as a vital organ, which is important to our you know, well being and survival has about 500 functions. So but it also is the manager of our hormones. So if your hormones go wonky, it tends to beat up your hair and your hair fall. So I mean, what happens with hair? Because hair even in as glorious as it can be, is I’m going to say decoration, okay? Yeah. Yeah, sorry for your survival. So when you go through a stress episode, or you’re maybe had an injury or something that is life threatening, all of the body’s energy goes to your vital organs, and it sacrifices your hair. So your hair basically says, oh, we’re getting out of the way. It goes to sleep, it goes dormant. Karen? Wow. And when it goes dormant, you can look on your watch and say, I had a stress event, you know, 90 days ago or something like that. And almost 90 days to the minute it then sheds. So you see doing hair today, what did you do three months ago or so. And if it’s continuing was there were there continuing stress events or something. And when we say stress events, it could be an injury, a car accident and death in the family, you know, just stress. And that is going to, you know, that is why we need to look at what what can we do to have the hair regrow? What can we do to nourish the hair, what can we do to calm down distress. Some of my other clients who are really, their adrenals are too high. Like they’re, you know, they’re getting up in the morning and rushing out and their adrenals are just going and they can’t stop. So adrenals are have a function of getting you out of the way getting you out of harm’s way You and I are walking down the street, let’s say a truck comes running around the corner and we have to look at each other and then grab each other and run like heck right that’s what adrenals are for. They’re not for everyday use. If you use them for everyday use it taxes the body and then your hair falls out. So really funny things that are kind of all combined. That you know it’s interesting that one thing affects the other and we really have to look carefully at how we’re living our life to be able to get a good night’s sleep to be able to drink enough water to be able to look glorious when we’re going out the door you know with or without makeup and hopefully with our own hair

Karen Yankovich 19:22
right so i also you know so I see a natural path and I have and I actually should bring your invite your products with me the next time I go but I you know I’m on a she hasn’t been on a couple of supplements right I’m on regular multivitamin and just some D and not much because I’m not really I don’t really want to take a lot of things so I was saw the love your liver and I was thinking well now I’m taking all this multivitamin stuff maybe I don’t need both. So you think that even if you’re taking solid multivitamins and things like that, that the love your liver is still important. It’s for the hormone balance.

Cydney Mar 19:53
It’s totally different function. Like the multi is probably I’m going to guess if it’s if a good Malte, shall we say is a is a B complex. That is, make sure that all of the B vitamins are in harmony because they need to be in balanced not to cause deficiency and one of the others, like if people who take a b 12 shot have to be followed by a doctor, because they need to look at all of the different, you know, all the balance of the vitamins. So but a B vitamin is totally different. And if you look at the ingredients isn’t the same as what’s in a in the love your liver, love your liver, or a liver product would be about supporting the liver function it and the first thing is because it’s a filter, it needs to be lightly, gently detox, like get all the gunk out, right. And then it needs to be repaired. My product is actually also does repair so it does regenerate liver tissue. And it has been noted what is in that formulation has been noted to reverse cirrhosis. Can you imagine?

Karen Yankovich 21:01
Wow, no, I didn’t know that. That’s, that’s awesome. That’s awesome. Your products are amazing. They really are. They really, aren’t we I mean, listen, I don’t we didn’t really necessarily have you come out here to to tell everybody how great your products are. But I just you know, they are. It’s really more about, you know, being an entrepreneur, your entrepreneurial journey. But definitely, of course, we’ll put links to all of this in the show notes for this episode, because you all need to check this out. You know, my so my family, let me ask you this. My family has a his my the women and my mother’s family have a history of hair loss. Now I tend to I have my dad’s hair. So I don’t have the same hair loss that my mother’s family has. But I’m telling you, they need wigs. When I say that there’s low hair, like you can see their scalps. Like they need wigs I have, you know, relatives that have had like, I don’t know, some tattooing thing or, you know, or something like that. Because it’s you can literally see their scalp. So do you think that I mean, am I pushing you over the edge now, but of course, I always see that even though I’ve not experienced it, I always have a lot I’ve very thin hair. But I don’t have that same level of hair loss that some of the other my the women in my family have. But of course, I always think that it’s gonna happen tomorrow. Right? So do you think that this could help with that, even though it’s some genetic?

Cydney Mar 22:08
You know, here’s the thing is that, you know, I would want to and that is why on my website, I have a little like health and beauty chat, just to get a little bit of information about, like you said, there’s some family hereditary aspects to that there, you know, so I need to know a little bit about the pharma meds that you’re taking, and maybe, you know, like we’re talking about, has one been through a number of stresses so that I can help put together a protocol that can help there were white papers done and clinical trials on my active ingredient, and there is an 85% success rate. But it can also mean there is a 15% not success rate, because the movie Yeah. It says just we can get right. Yes, yes, I, I think that to an 85%. Generally speaking, we can help. And then sometimes we have to unpack some I’m going to say things that maybe either clients or friends are not confessing that they’re doing

Karen Yankovich 23:10
right. Yep, yep. Yep.

Cydney Mar 23:12
Sometimes I had one client come to me, and then it’s related to the love your liver, she perfect, looked perfectly healthy. She said, Let me try that vitamin, I’m starting to lose my hair. And then you know, she was a hairdresser and came back to me Two months later and said, it’s not working Winona, and I said, Listen, Honey, what else is going on with you? Tell me Tell mom everything you know, and the doctor did to have a liver issue. There you go. And I said might make me a promise. Take the love your lover. Try this together. And then I’ll die rise in my journal, when to call you back. And we’ll see how it goes. And before those two months were up, she called me back. Yeah, it works. Yeah,

Karen Yankovich 23:55
yeah. Yeah. I love it. I do. I love it. I love it. And I think that you know, whatever we can do, I’m all for do what you got to do, right? If you want to go do what you got to do you want to go to plastic surgeon and get taken care of Go for it, do it. But whatever we can do to to keep our natural bodies in as good a shape as we can. Let’s do it. Right? Like why not? Right? Why not get extensions, get whatever you want. But at the same time, let’s you know, let’s keep our eye on and you know, I will tell you this, one of the things that I because I also have a thyroid issue. So my eyebrows, my eyelashes are often you know, thin. So I think my eyelashes are longer since I’ve been taking your hair skin and nails. Which is really because I’m always that’s something I always struggle I don’t really want to wear, I don’t really want to wear false eyelashes, at least not every day. And I also don’t want to get I don’t want to really get eyelash extensions because I know I just don’t want the follow up. I don’t want the you know, having to go every week or two or every couple of weeks. So I don’t want to do any of that. Like I want it to be naturally done. And I was like just the other day I was like you know what, I bet this is Sydney’s product that’s making my eyelashes even a little bit longer and thicker

Cydney Mar 24:57
and eyebrows but if I Right issue what kind of salt to use?

Karen Yankovich 25:02
I use Himalayan sea salt currently.

Cydney Mar 25:06
Oh, it’s a Himalayan sea salt. Okay, so I’m not sure what that because you have a source of iodine? Because Did you know and maybe we talked about it when we were chatting before, but a thyroid will not function without iodine or any vitamin E. So you need those two things before you go on to…

Karen Yankovich 25:27
Vitamin E. I don’t think I take I mean, I’m sure it’s in some probably in my multi

Cydney Mar 25:31
Oh, it will not be there a vitamin separately get a 400 a 400 iu, vitamin D. Okay, and you’re gonna see, you know, because we often recommend a 400 iu vitamin E, I don’t do single, single ingredient formula. Me for vitamin D or fighting. Right, right. Yep, yep. And a source of a good source of iodine. So if it’s a Himalayan salt with Cece with, like, kelp, or something in it, I’m calm.

Karen Yankovich 26:01
But okay, off the look off. Look, I don’t know,

Cydney Mar 26:04
with my friends and clients who go into, say, the fancy salts and have no source of iodine. It’s like, what are you doing?

Karen Yankovich 26:15
Well, I’ll have to check it out off to check it out. So you’ve got so much going on. I mean, I’m looking at your full bio, see, you know, QVC, Japan, QVC. Italy. I mean, just you’ve been all over the world, you’ve done so many cool things. You’ve had multiple, you know, things. And then I mean, then you don’t even know I don’t really want to spend all another half hour time. It’s been you reinvented yourself again, right post, you know, during the pandemic, which we talked about the beginning, creating this face mask product. So you and that happened? I mean, come on you. You are right, I watched you do that. Right. Because obviously was only 18 months ago. So you had to have done that on a dime, like you couldn’t, you know, wasn’t like, like, let me spend two years of developing this, like you had it you had already? I think it was April or May you want you’re already you’re already selling this. Right. So tell us how, you know, how did that happen?

Cydney Mar 26:58
Well, you know, when it’s product oriented, one of the things they say to you is, are you solving a problem? You know, or do you see a problem that needs to be solved? Like if you and I went for grain our box, we’d probably hear, you know, to the left or the right, a mum complaining about a clip on her kids backpack, or someone else saying, you know, they’re my pen isn’t writing, I’m sure there could be a better pen, there’s always somebody, always something you’re trying to solve. So, pandemic happened, and I’m walking around my neighborhood, you know, many feet apart, looking at people wearing what I’m going to call and I’m so sorry for anybody that I’m insulting. But seeing these god awful prints horribly sewn into badly fitted face masks, and I’m thinking, What’s the point of that? Right? No, I wanted to solve a problem. I wanted to have things that were better fitting that were comfortable, that were fashionable night, you know, et cetera, et cetera. So I created face masks love. And what happened with that was, you know, I and I called up my friends in the trade. I said, who’s who’s got, you know, factories, you know, and we actually had to restart the factories and put in protocols to make sure that, you know, some of the workers could come back to, you know, because everybody was, like, everything was closed, right? Hey, right. Like, who’s got fabric? Who’s got factories? Who’s got some people? How can we set it up? You know, to make one way, I guess distance? Like, would they come in one way they go out another, you know, so that they don’t, there’s not all this going for stuff. They do that in hospitals as well. And it was really fun to sort of start to go in create, and also set up the all of the website for it. And what happened, you know, opportunities happen when you step up to the plate, Karen. And that is, what happened is it my friends in the neighborhood said, Hey, we heard that the city of Montreal needs face mass, and they don’t know who to go to and who’s open. So here’s here’s who to call. I contacted them. You know, within a couple of weeks, I had an order for I don’t I can’t remember now 10 or 20,000 units. I got them delivered in three weeks. And then with that, I ended up with a vendor number to the government. And and then I saw something else for the federal government. And I thought, Oh, that looks like me. That looks like something I can do. So I bid on this tender and I was able to get a contract for a quarter of a million units of face masks, which I then shipped early to the government and the people that I was talking to who support teaching the new vendors to the government how to navigate the system. They were like you are a subject matter expert. We like come here. So they kindly encouraged me to apply to become a pre approved pro services consultant. And so I got my stamp of approval. And hopefully there’ll be some interesting contracts that I can do as a consultant to the government in the near future.

Karen Yankovich 30:10
So So what’s what’s next? What is next for Cydney Mar?

Cydney Mar 30:14
What is next? Well, gosh, you know, that’s a great question. I’m actually pondering taking because I’ve got, as you know, kind of a lot of things, a lot of irons in the fire. I’m looking at how can I streamline this because, as you know, in my tender age, I want to make my life simpler. I still love being a service, but I’m actually rethinking of amalgamating all of my websites and my brand into one instead of having three separate websites. So that’s what I’m thinking of doing so that I can spend more time being of service instead of doing the backend stuff. Right. Right. Yeah. So looking to hire and invest in the indigenous communities. Because I think you know, that I I’m indigenous, I’m Chinese, Scottish. And I’m in color. katma Thompson River Salish from British Columbia. Okay. And so, you know, there’s a lot of learning. Yeah. The input cat, my language.

Karen Yankovich 31:20
interesting.

Cydney Mar 31:21
It’s hard.

Karen Yankovich 31:22
I bet I bet. Wow. So I’m going to share, share links to all of this in, you know, in our show notes, links to your products, links to the things you’re doing. Is there anything you want to leave our audience with here today, because I just think your story is so inspiring and and that you just continue to reinvent yourself. Because you’re because even though you’re saying you’re reinventing yourself, but really what you’re doing is you’re building on what you’ve done before, right? Like, I had a lot of people that were talking to me that were looking to build to do face masks, but you had you were able to pull from your previous experience as a, you know, as a fashion designer, you had the connections, you had these things, right. So, so you’re reinventing yourself, but you’re also building I think, from what I see on what you’ve previously done. So how can people connect with you and follow up with you?

Cydney Mar 32:04
Oh, goodness, you know, really, they just have to Google me, I’m from being on QVC. All those years, the SEO is on my name is all over the place. So that is why interestingly enough that my consulting business for product development is Sydney mar.com. Why my wellness is like, I can’t hide 30 years of being in the fashion trade. So if I call me out, it would never, you know, sort of like that. She’s the fashion designer, we don’t get it wasn’t chiva you know,

Karen Yankovich 32:36
right. Right. Right. I love it. Well, then it makes sense that you’re going to tie it all together under one brand to that all makes sense.

Cydney Mar 32:43
Yes, it seems a bit daunting, but I’m looking to interview and, you know, look to pull together the team to reflect back to me on, you know how that’s going to look how I can streamline it because I want to spend more time of being a service, I also want to as we’re talking about having a full and nuanced life, to take time for my own cultural studies, because I feel like I’ve missed so much, because my family had our indigenous background.

Karen Yankovich 33:15
Is that right,

Cydney Mar 33:17
yeah, and you know, what, it’s funny, one of our heroes in the community is just four years older than me. And, you know, he suffered at residential school, and one of the ones who made major changes here in Canada, and I mean, I know that, you know, even though I miss so much, and and didn’t get to learn our language and culture as a child, and that’s why I’m so committed to doing it. Now. I want all of it I I’m studying, actually, at the University of Alberta, the basic native study so that I can understand everything. It’s been given by Dr. Tracy bear. And I’m also in the communities learning language and doing attending the elder storytelling, which is fabulous. So there’s so much to know. And to you know, what’s interesting, is it a couple of months ago, I also took a business some Dei, so Diversity, Equity and Inclusion course. And it really brought to my attention the nuances of our biases.

Karen Yankovich 34:29
Yeah, there are many, many, many nuances. Many I feel like this is another entire conversation, we can have so many nuances. Yes, yes. Yeah.

Cydney Mar 34:40
So that is really what’s next is learning how to streamline that so that I can take the time from my own cultural development and so to be able to provide enough time to give back

We love getting speakpipe messages, because it’s really a fun way to just communicate with our with you. Right? So we’re going back to basics. Today, we’re going back to basics today, it has it’s been a while since I’ve done it like LinkedIn 101 type episode. So I wanted to do that. Because you know, for a few reasons, you know, I do a lot of in person training. Well, I did do a lot of in person training, I’m going back to doing more in person training, obviously, over the pandemic, I did a ton of zoom training. So I shouldn’t say in person, I should say private training. So if you have an audience that you think could benefit by some LinkedIn training, please either check out the link in speakpipe. And give me a little message or, you know, send us a message where you can touch it’s hard not to be able to find me. And when we do this in person training, what I basically teach is, you know what you need to get started what you need to get started on LinkedIn. And you know, a lot of the episodes I do we talk about the energy that you need and the mindset I want you to be in and how to how to shift the energy from resume to personal brand. But sometimes there’s just stuff you got to do. Right. So today we’re going to talk about the stuff you got to do. Right. And you know, here’s the thing, I bet that all of you listening, when I say is update, I update my LinkedIn profile on your to do list. I bet all of you shaking your head, yep, yep, my profile needs some updating, right? So you know what I’m talking about, you know that it’s important that you update your profile. In order for you to achieve the goals, you have to meet the kind of people that can change your business and your life and your bank balance forever, right? Listen, our digital brands are here to stay, regardless of what happens with the world and the pandemic and blah, blah, blah, right virtual everything. Our digital brand is here to say, because what we’ve learned over the past year through 2020, and 2021, is a lot of this virtual stuff works. virtual networking works, do I miss people meeting people in person? I absolutely do. But there’s a part of me that really is going to miss the virtual networking, because I was able to attend networking events that I never would have been able to attend in person. So therefore, my digital brand is even more important because people are checking you out. Right? They want to check you out. If you’re there talking to talk and you’re like I, you know, I do all this cool stuff in this virtual networking, or virtual whatever, then they Google you and they can’t find anything, right? And you’re like, it’s a little bit of a disconnect, right? So I want your brand, your digital brand to match the amazingness of you that people see when they talk to you. That makes sense. Here’s the other thing. I have talked to people and I’m thinking of one person in particular, if you’re listening, you know who I’m talking about, who have told me that 100% they know that they’ve missed opportunities. They were offered an opportunity, whatever that opportunity might be, right? They had some competition, of course, we will have some competition. I’m not normally worried about that. But then they saw that the decision maker looked at their LinkedIn profile. And they didn’t get the opportunity and like kicking yourself, right, like, Listen, if you didn’t get the opportunity, but your LinkedIn profile is on point, then Okay, something that we don’t we don’t want them all right. But I don’t want you to be kicking yourself when you know, maybe there was one thing like she had said to me, this particular woman said to me, Karen, I have been following you for years. I’ve been meaning to call you for years, now that I’ve lost this big money opportunity. like where do I sign? How do I hire you? I want to get this done. Right? So so I don’t want you to miss these opportunities. I want you to get these opportunities. And here’s the thing, this the work we’re going to talk about today. The things we’re gonna talk about today is just going to make it more Solid, it’s gonna make your brand more solid. And it’s not easy to do this yourself, I completely recognize that. But you got to start somewhere, right? So we’re gonna start with you doing it. And of course, you know, if you want my help, you know, you can always reach out to me. So there’s three places on your LinkedIn profile that I think, listen, I want your whole profile done. But there’s three places on your LinkedIn profile that I think is important to be done, to at least just capture the attention of the people that are most important. Okay, there’s a lot of other places to talk about. So don’t be like, Well, what about this? And what about that? Yeah, yeah, we need to do it. All right. But if you just do these three things, it’s it’s at least giving you like, it’s given you a leg up, you’re ready, you’re on your way, right, and you can at least be presentable. And you can feel free to start reaching out to people, you know, that can change your business, your your life and your bank account. And the first section is the headline. Now the headline is what is under your name under your picture. So my headline if you want to know what I’m talking about, if you’re looking at my profile, my headline at the time that I’m recording this, and of course, I change this stuff all the time. So it’s helping women entrepreneurs, and business professionals grow a profitable LinkedIn network, LinkedIn success, strategist, keynote speaker, virtual networking trainer. So a couple things about that. First of all, you have you have 220 characters you can use here. So you definitely want to use every single one of them. Because there’s such a thing as LinkedIn search, right? So people are searching for the things that you do, I want your profile to come up soon, the way they know that is if you’re inserting your keywords right into this, so you wanna use every character and use your keywords, obviously, LinkedIn, you know, keynote speaker LinkedIn training, I’m actually I’ve actually advised most of the people I’ve talked to, to insert the word virtual into this headline somewhere, because people are looking for virtual networking trainers out virtual, whatever you do, right? Maybe what you do is virtual by nature, maybe you’re a coach, and you’ve never worked with anybody in person, use that word now, because people are searching it. And it’s gonna come, it’s gonna stand out, make you stand out from your competition. And that’s what we want. So in this headline, you want to be using every character. And remember that people don’t really care about you. They don’t care about you, they care about what you can do for them. So in this headline, I want you to tell people who you are. So in my case, I’m a LinkedIn success strategist, keynote speaker, virtual networking trainer, who I help entrepreneurs, women, entrepreneurs, and business professionals, and how do I help them I help them grow a profitable LinkedIn network, who you are, who you help, and how you help them? Nobody cares about all the letters after your name, nobody cares. I mean, yes, I want you to, if you have a doctorate, you earned it, and I want you to use it, because I absolutely positioned you with credibility and authority, and I, and I don’t want to minimize that at all. And all the letters after your name, right, but nobody cares about that stuff. They care about what you can do for them. All of that’s going to help you stand out from your competition. And of course, I want you to use it, I want you to be confidently projecting into the world, right, what you do and what you can do for people. But like, the example that I use a lot is maybe you’re a financial planner, and maybe you’re a financial planner that’s helped tons and tons of people make tons and tons of money. And I know you can’t, you probably have a license that says you can’t say this stuff. And I get that right. This is just an example. But if you say I’m a financial planner, and I have all these letters after my name, that’s cool. I love that. But there’s a million of you on LinkedIn, right? But if your headline says, I’m a financial planner, with all these letters after my name, that helped women over 50 create enough wealth to retire at 60. Now I’m like, Wait, what? I need this person, this financial planner is talking to me, right? And she can under she understands my unique situation. So do you see where I’m going with this. So if you just take time to create a headline that positions you as an expert, but also if you’ve got a niche, lean into it, because it doesn’t mean you can’t help other people, right? This financial planner doesn’t mean she can’t help men, doesn’t mean she can’t help you know, college students. But this is her specialty. And when you have a specialty, right, like my specialty is supporting women on LinkedIn. If there’s a conference looking for a speaker, if it’s a woman’s conference, looking for a speaker, there’s a lot of LinkedIn speakers out there, right. But I support women specifically. So now I have a leg up over a lot of my competition, that maybe support LinkedIn. And otherwise, we’re all good. There’s a lot of great LinkedIn speakers out there. But I, you know, listen, I’m cool. I don’t want to speak in front of a group of you know, I don’t know, that doesn’t make any sense for me to speak to write, I would much rather speak in front of a group of people that have my ideal clients and the people I really want to work with in it. So think about that when you’re creating your headline, but take care of the headline, it’s going to default to most current experience title if you don’t do this. And again, nobody really cares that you’re a coach or consultant or an accountant or an attorney or whatever, they don’t care. They want to know what you can do for them. Okay, so that’s the first part of your profile that I want you to take a look at. The second part of your profile is your about section. And the about section, I want you to be like it doesn’t say used to be called a summary, but it used to be called your summary. And a summary is boring. It’s just full of, you know, here’s what Karen does, right? But about is interesting about his personal, right. So just that little shift from summary to about, I think was a tiny little show. Technically, but a made a big psychological shift in the way they’re that we’re presenting ourselves on LinkedIn. Right? You’ve 2600 characters hear us, every single one of them. And I hear you, I can hear you across the ethers. Karen, who’s reading all that I don’t care who’s reading all that, right? First of all, people are reading all that your exact right, people are going to be reading all that I’m going to talk about what to write and how to write it in a minute. But second of all, there’s 2600 keyword characters that you can build in for your keywords, right, so that you start coming up in more searches for the things you want to be found for. If you’re not feeding LinkedIn, LinkedIn is not going to know when to bring you up. And I promise you, your competitors are getting this business. So I want you to get it. So use this summary, use all 2600 characters. Here’s the thing, I don’t want this to be one big giant paragraph because no one’s reading that. So think like sales page, right? Like you want a little bit of whitespace in there, you want to make it readable. I want it to be a narrative. I like it in first person, you know, not third person, no one wants to read Karen Yankovich has an what via vast experience and like nobody’s reading that, right? make it interesting. Make it cool. Make it mate hook me with a really cool story that tells me exactly what you do and why you do it. Right. Like, you know, I could say something like, my refrigerator is covered with recommendations or success stories of the women in my program that have you know, hit their first $50,000 month, right? Like if I say that, and that now people looked at like, Oh, wait, I wanna I want a $50,000 month, right? But isn’t that more interesting, then the people in my program have success? If I say my refrigerator is covered with like, like my kids report cards on there and said, I have my clients successes on there. Like, do you get what I’m saying? make it interesting hook me don’t like people think they need to do corporate speak on LinkedIn. That is not true. I actually spoke to a LinkedIn, somebody that works at LinkedIn recently. And we talked about the fact that LinkedIn has changed, you know, the energy of LinkedIn used to be online resume, it’s now personal brand. So you need to shift the energy of your profile from resume to brand. And the brand view is much cooler than your resume. Right? So I want you to do that. Tell me about that, in your summary, tell me what makes you unique. Feel free to model mine, by the way, like I don’t care at all, feel free to model mine. You’ll notice at the end, I have specialties listed. Guess what those are, those are my keywords, right. So feel free to do that. Right? I don’t want you to shove keywords in where they don’t belong. But obviously, think about what people are searching for on LinkedIn that you want to come up with the search result and use that in your summary. Because now, if you’re doing outreach on LinkedIn, and you’re reaching out to people, because you want to get on their podcast, or you want to be a speaker, or you want to client rate, whenever you’re reaching out to people on LinkedIn to do, you need to make sure your profile looks worthy of their time. And now it’s starting to write now it’s starting to now you’re starting to intrigue them a little bit. When they see that message from you. They’re gonna be like, Ha, she seems pretty cool, right? That’s what you want. Alright, the third section we want to talk about is just the first experience section. Now, let me just say that I want you to fill in your experience section way back to when you went to McDonald’s in high school. Okay, because somebody might have worked there with you. And you know, maybe they’ll like, wow, I wonder if that’s the person that worked with McDonald’s, right? Here’s the thing. There’s, I don’t care, nobody cares. You made cheeseburgers at McDonald’s. Right? But if you were the person that they brought, like, what you’re doing now is customer service related, like your, your, you know, like you help people really, you know, build relationships, right? You can say, you know, when I worked at McDonald’s, I was the one that they put on the register when cranky, Mr. Murphy used to walk in, because I was the only one that could schmooze him. And he walked out of there smiling, instead of driving everybody crazy, right? Like that. Nobody cares, he made cheeseburgers, but that if that’s relevant to what you’re doing now, tell me that kind of stuff in your experience. So build it up. But don’t worry about all that stuff for now. Right? Don’t worry about all that stuff. For now. For now, all we’re doing is talking about the most current experience, because let’s get real, that’s all the people really care about, when that’s the most, that’s what they care about the most. Okay, so take care of that first experience. And this is of course, where it is more resume like, right, use your keywords. Your headline doesn’t have to be account executive, it could be, you know, voicemail marketing guru, right, if that’s what you sell, whatever you do, right, like, use your keywords, voicemail marketing as a keyword for you then put that in your headline, right? It doesn’t have to say what’s on your business card. There’s no LinkedIn police saying what’s on your business card. I mean, don’t make it you can make it up. But don’t misrepresent yourself. Right? Like, make sure it’s authentic. Because people will find that out in a minute. Right? But you got to do this, you got to do this and you and then and then in the experience, beef it up a little bit. If you know, tell me about your wins. Tell me how much you know if what you did if what you did was sales related. Tell me about how much you grew the sales for this department. You know if what if you have clients, tell me about your clients wins, how many what you do for them, right? Again, tell me about you but make it about me. Okay, so if you just do those three sections, you’ve got a huge head start. Right, then when people check out your profile, they, they’ll at least feel like you’re somebody that is worthy of their time. Okay, and probably when that decision maker looks at your LinkedIn profile, if you’ve done this work, you’re not going to lose that business because of a crappy LinkedIn profile. Right? You’re not gonna lose it. Because of that, I can’t promise you’re gonna get it. But Alicia LinkedIn profile won’t be you know, what will be will do its best to help support you landing those bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger contracts. Okay, so I just want to I just want to recap this for a second, the three sections I want you to do to just move forward with your LinkedIn profile is your headline. Right? We have 220 characters, your summary, we have 2600 characters, and your first experience section. Here’s the deal, we all miss opportunities. But when we see they looked at our LinkedIn profile, and we know it could be better than we’re kicking ourselves, right? I don’t want you to be kicking yourself. Don’t be that person. And, you know, here’s the other thing I mentioned to you, like, I don’t want this to be your resume, your resume is all about who you used to be. Nobody cares about who you used to be about hiring Karen from 10 years ago, right? I want you to project into the future. As you’re writing this the person that you’re becoming dress for the job you want not the job you have, right. So think about what future Karen is how what she’s doing, how she’s doing it the kind of the cool people that are in her life, right? And why your profile, so those people are like, wow, I need to get to know her. I want to know her better. Right? So of course I want your whole profile done. Of course I want your whole profile done. But you have to start somewhere. I mean, listen, I can tell you story after story after story about people in our program in our she’s linked up program that just from getting the profile done, had these huge successes like Jenny Cameron, who was episode Oh, was last week Jenny Cameron was Episode 171. Jenny Cameron, if you haven’t listened to 171, listen to it just by changing her profile, just by changing the profile. She didn’t start connecting with anybody and earning that stuff. Just by changing her profile. The she her her boss’s boss reached out to her and said, How do I not know you? You’re more qualified for my job than I am. And I want you know, we have an opportunity. We want you to interview for 12 years she’d been at the same job 12 years. Five weeks, she’s doing her profile for a couple weeks, not even a couple weeks. She’s doing a profile. And she got and she wasn’t even looking for that by the way, but she got offered a new job. So if you haven’t listened to 171 yet, then listen to that because Jenny Cameron is a perfect example of why you want your profiles on why this is so important. And what you’re missing by not doing it right. How many opportunities to Jenny Miss in the 12 years she didn’t do this. I mean, listen, I’m not I’m not I don’t live in regrets, right. I’m not living I’m not living in regrets, but let’s get real. Let’s Let’s not miss another one. Let’s put it that way. Let’s not miss another one. Jenny’s journey to success started with our online masterclass. As you know, I mentioned earlier that she’s linked up our goal is to recreate wealthy women of influence. Jenny is on her way to being a wealthy woman of influence it and she started with an on demand on demand masterclass. I would love to invite you to watch it as well. Right I refer to LinkedIn as absolutely my money tree. So our on demand masterclass, you can find out what are that money tree COMM The links are all in the show notes. Check it out. It’s on demand. It’s It’s my gift to you. Right. I want you to understand, once you do these couple things, listen to the masterclass. So now you understand a little bit about the shifts, that when you start to make some mindset shifts around how you use LinkedIn, and what you’re missing when you’re not using LinkedIn. That’s where the money starts coming in. And listen, I really I truly believe I love doing the show. I truly love doing the show. But I believe if I like stopped my podcasts and stopped posting and every other social media site and just did the work that I do on LinkedIn, I don’t think I’d lose much of my business would take a big hit the money, the vast majority of the money that comes into my business comes in through LinkedIn. So it can be the same for you. So let’s help each other out. I do this on demand masterclass. For you. I do this podcast every week for you. These are all my gifts to you. I would love you know, I would love for you to share this podcast with your audience and help me out right a rising tide lifts all boats. So let’s rise together. Let’s lift each other up. Help me Help you share this podcast, take a quick screenshot of this episode on your phone. Share that on your social media tag me I’m at Karen Yankovich. So I can share it with my audience. And then we both get more visibility, right? This is so important. And this is honestly this doesn’t take long. This is like an hour on your calendar, get yourself a glass, a glass of wine, whatever floats your boat, and just do these couple things. tag me if you want when you’re done or message me on LinkedIn. I’m happy to take a look at it. But let’s do this. Let’s do this. Let’s not miss any more opportunities. All right. Step one. Hallmark number one, do the three things we talked about on this podcast Hallmark number two, check out what are that manjushree.com and the on demand masterclass. And I promise you by the way, we’re not selling anything on that masterclass. It’s just pure content. If you want some help from us, we’ll tell you at the end how you can get some help from us, but it’s not we’re not selling anything. Don’t need your credit card, do those couple things. And I promise you, if you take action on these things, you’re going to start to see the shift. Fast. exciting, exciting. Okay, I’ll be back here next week with another episode. And until then, enjoy

About the Episode:

In our digital world, videos are becoming more and more popular and necessary. And while videos need to be natural, comfortable, and real, there are some ways to make your videos look top-notch without going overboard.

For starters, you’ll need a screencast program. This will help you record yourself while sharing your screen. When you record yourself, you need to make sure you have good lighting. And while speaking, make sure to look directly into the camera to make a deeper connection with your audience.

In addition, make sure you have a good background, whether that’s a backdrop or a nice-looking background in your house or office. It can also be hard to adjust to your hearing yourself on video, but remember… that’s how others hear you. There’s nothing to worry about!

Listen to Episode 171 to hear Dr. Jennifer’s tips on how to master your videos!

And doesn’t mean I don’t want your applications because I do. But I also want you to meet the cool people that are already in my life. So Jenny, I’m so excited to have you here today.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 4:06
Oh, Karen, thank you so much for having me. I have listened to your podcast a long time before I was one of your students. And this is really a special moment for me. So thank you so much for having me.

Karen Yankovich 4:16
Oh, I am it’s my absolute pleasure to have you shoot you. I loved learning about you and what you’re doing. So tell us take a minute, take a step back. We read your bio, but tell us a little bit about your journey. How did you go tell us about your time in video production and then how you move from video production to teaching.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 4:32
So I went to school for I was an English teacher originally Well, I went to school and I have an English degree and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with it and I kind of stumbled into television. I worked first creating commercials and then I was working on a very popular all live home shopping network. I was working there originally on their floor and as a floor manager and then working on their commercials associate producer and I loved it. But every time you want to get promoted, you were put on the night shift. And you work nowadays. And, you know, I wanted to have a family and I wanted to have a life, right? Because I loved what I was doing. I met really cool people, lots of celebrities. I, you know, I have stories that seem unbelievable now when I think back on it, but, you know, ultimately, it was my entire life. And I, like I said, I knew I wanted to have a family, I wanted to get married. So when I met my husband, who was working as a teacher, and I kind of naturally always kind of had a teaching side of me, and everyone kind of my life was like, yeah, we were waiting for you to realize you were a teacher at heart. So Oh, that’s so cute. So funny. So I went back to school, to be a teacher. But while I was going back to school, I actually stumbled into a position to help with video broadcasting for high school with some old teachers that had been their student years ago. And I just loved it. And from there, I really was one of the organic things where I just kept getting different positions kept coming up from video production until language arts, and then I fell into the middle school classroom for a long time and loved it COVID hit, and I was kind of stuck. And that’s when I joined your program. Because I was stuck. I knew I needed to be doing more, I knew I had all these skills, but I didn’t know how to share them with everybody. And COVID hit and everybody was making instructional videos or zooming or trying to and for me, that was second nature. I just felt.

Karen Yankovich 6:26
Right. I mean, and for so many, it’s just completely foreign

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 6:31
it was. And it was one of those things where I was kind of like, I felt like I had so much to share with the world, I went and got my doctorate in education as well in educational leadership. And while I was doing that, I had my son, you know, my husband, and I, you know, we were establishing our family. And I was just kind of like stuck. And we’ll have a lot more to share with people, but I didn’t know like how to do it or what it was. And when. And I was reading a lot of things for my blog posts and just trying to help teachers. And when COVID hit, I was like, This is what I’m good at. And this is how I and you know, it’s kind of in history since then. I mean, I just realized that a lot of my colleagues were struggling with getting online being comfortable in line, you know, creating videos. And that was really kind of when I started honing on how to help teachers create videos, because I saw all of this resistance to helping people using video, there’s always a reason why they couldn’t get online, or they couldn’t shoot that video, or they didn’t know, they thought students weren’t watching it or they weren’t good enough, or they didn’t have the right equipment. So I’ve been spending a lot of times past year talking to teachers about how to use screencasting. Because screencasting is really probably the lowest barrier entry for anyone, either professional or educational person to get involved in video because all you need is a laptop, a and a camera on your laptop to get started along with like a free extended extension for a video screening program like screencastify or loom or screencast o Matic that’s all you need to start getting your genius and the world. And I realized to me, that seemed easy, but for a lot of people, they just didn’t realize how easy it was to get started if somebody needed a great camera or might period lighting kit. And so I really talked to people about how to get started right away with screencasting. And you know, I talked to a lot of educators but other people in the professional world as well about because this really transcends to anyone who wants to help others about basic things you can do to create more video confidence, and how to just get started and just get it done. And experience and things will come.

Karen Yankovich 8:48
So then you so you started to look at that though, as a side business, right? It was just you were doing it kind of naturally, but but helping other people then started to become a side business. So how did that happen? Because I know there’s a lot of you that listen to this show that are looking to make the transition from a full time job to like a side gig, whether you’re leaving your job or not leaving your job right. In fact, we did Episode 166 is all about that. Right? So tell us a little bit about that. Like how did you Where do you find the time to do it all?

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 9:20
Well, as you probably know, like I’m, you know, I’m a mom, and a wife and a teacher and I run my own business and so it is a lot and I would say I’m still on the journey. This is still it’s become a huge part of my life. It is still a side hustle. It is integrating into everything I do in my life though. I’m now you know as one big when I had in your course was I knew I needed to get my GED. I knew that square professionals word I was trying to reach professionals not that social media doesn’t have professionals but I knew there was a certain type of person I was trying to reach people who are professionals that want to use their genius to help other people and I knew LinkedIn was the place to do it, but I didn’t know really know how to get started. And I know I shared this when in your group that once I started going through your course and you know, following your recommendations and getting health score to people in your group, I think I was in your question about six weeks and my boss’s boss, the top level in my, in my education world, messaged me on a Sunday and said, I had just posted a small video about how to help teachers how to help students focus by using by encouraging them to wear earbuds. And it’s really simple little tip that I had put out there. Because I wrote about it in my, my weekly newsletter, I thought, Oh, well, I’ll post this in LinkedIn. And messaged me, he was like, we need to talk on Monday, I have an opportunity for you. And it was that quick, I had been stuck in the same position for 12 years, I had applied for a ton of jobs. But it was LinkedIn. In the video that I posted there. That got me an instructional coach position. So that is what…

Karen Yankovich 10:59
And as much as I would love to take all the credit for that I have to give you credit. Because what you did, what I saw you do was shift your energy, right? You were like, I don’t know, I do these videos, I have this thing and you shifted your energy to I am the CEO of this, this, you know this business, I have a business, right. And when you shifted your energy and created a LinkedIn profile that really positioned you, as somebody influential, not just somebody that knows how to create videos, I think to me, that was the shift. And that is that is the shift. It’s it’s, as you know, listen, we teach strategy. But it’s the mindset piece that I think is the first piece that that our students, but everyone that’s doing this needs to really accept, right that you’ve got ambitions, but like, if you’re if your ambitions are up here, and your mindset is down here, it’s just not gonna happen. But when you brought your mindset up to match your ambitions, and like, I can do this, I can show up like that. You people started taking notice. I mean, not just you’re not just your boss. Right, but your family and and and your neighbors, right.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 11:58
Yeah. I mean, we were laughing as I said that I had a mayor of my town, saw one of my videos, I didn’t even realize we were friends on LinkedIn. And he came to my house and knocked on my door. Talk to me. laughing because you know, you just don’t you don’t know who you touch sometimes, yes, yes. needs help, can we keep so much inside? And you know, you just don’t know who you’re gonna connect with. And I think it’s taking those risks. And like you said, the mindset piece, I’m always been a confident person. I’m comfortable on camera, I’m comfortable being the first person to volunteer for things. I’m comfortable. I talked in front of a live audience every day all day long. And for my job this year, especially since I was online and in person. I mean, it was like being on a talk show all day long. I’m uncomfortable in that zone. So I thought, well, I’m competent person. I don’t have mindset issues. Was I wrong? I’m sorry, you’re my history here. I’m at home right now. But I was so wrong. I had mindset issues we all do them is? Yes. Don’t we have to work through that. And I love that you always come back to that. And I know that some people think oh, mindset is kind of a woowoo thing. But it’s not it’s a real thing. We all have mindset issues. We all have mindset issues around money around confidence, achievement. You know, no matter how good you look on paper, if you’re not getting your vibes out into the world, if you’re not trying to help people, it doesn’t matter what your resume looks like. And that’s where I was wrong. I thought LinkedIn was about your resume. Right. And I worked through your program. And what I really needed was, it’s, it’s not your resume, it’s who you are, and who you could be, who you’re meant to be. If he wanted me,

Karen Yankovich 13:43
to bring you a little bit of a tear to my Jenny. It’s so true. It’s so true. And that’s why I wanted to have you on here, because it doesn’t matter. I mean, of course, I want people to know about your services. But I think that, that shift, making that shift is doable for anybody, regardless of where you are now and where you want to be. It’s doable, no matter what I mean, we had a we had a conversation earlier today, actually, on the q&a call for the program. And we’re talking about the fact that like, mindset and negativity, like if you hold on to that, and you have to be right about being negative, or being realistic or whatever, you’re just going to be stuck there forever. But if you open your eyes to the possibility and why not you right, why not Jenny Cameron, as the you know, the person taking the lead on helping schools use video in a more educational way, and in a way that is, you know, easy for the teachers to implement and, and, you know, great for the students to help them learn more, why not? You be that person that champions that Yeah, somebody’s got to do it.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 14:44
Yeah, absolutely. And you know, as you were talking, I was just kind of thinking back to you know, I’m kind of a very visual person and I had like this vision board for this year with COVID. And I have to this first year of my life that I have achieved almost everything on that board, and it’s a good feeling but one of the last things I had is I wanted to start transitioning not only into speaking, I’ve already transitioned into coaching teachers and educators and professionals on video have already transitioned this year into really getting my genies out, I was already doing it, but I wasn’t owning it before. But I also wanted to kind of we talked a lot about getting to the college level and helping people at that level as well and university and reaching out to professionals in that way. And what’s funny, I was literally at a, like a park event this weekend. It was like, you know, a celebration for the Fourth of July. And I bumped into somebody, and I gave them and we got talking and she worked at a local university here as I’d love to come start teaching. And she’s like, Oh, yeah, you know, and I was like, yeah, people, we get talking, we realize we need some people, but I handed my card with my LinkedIn. Mm. Oh, she looked me up about five minutes later, right? Yeah, yeah, my information Five minutes later to people about me possibly coming there to talk or teach. And the amazing thing about LinkedIn is, unlike other social media platforms, unlike your website, you have the ability to just like we said, Put everything You are everything you want to be, you know, I have for this class from your group, I wouldn’t have known to do this, but I have my, you know, my videos on there, I have things about local conferences I’m doing, I have my history, my background groups involvement, all of a sudden, somebody gets a quick bead on who you are and what you have to offer. And that is not being offered anywhere else in other social media.

Karen Yankovich 16:35
It’s it’s so true. It’s so true. And you know, it is it is, as you’re saying this, I’m thinking that so Jenny joined our program, proceeded to get promoted. Right. So after we wrote her whole profile, it now needed to be updated. And I don’t even think you’ve done I don’t even think we’ve done the updates yet, right? Like so. So you’re even working off a profile that isn’t even the most updated because she, you know, she had success so fast that we couldn’t even keep up with it on her profile. So as you’re saying, like you’re handing out your card, and people seeing your profile, it isn’t even showcasing I think your best self, I think there’s like another level that we’ve got to hit. Because you because of the you know, the the changes that have happened in your life. And that’s what I love. But what I want to just like kind of share about that is it is always a living, breathing thing, like your LinkedIn profile isn’t one and done. But when it’s done, when you take the time to do it, right, I mean, you take the time to showcase it to the point where the mayor of the town is knocking on your door, you can always just tweak it from there, right? Like you can’t, you know, like, it’s not, it doesn’t have to be state, it doesn’t have to stay forever. That way, you can always tweak it. Like, for example, a lot of the things we’re talking about now, and I don’t know if we did this in your profile, but you know, if you if what you do, like let’s if what you do, if you can help people that are transitioning back to the office, because of COVID. Or if you’re you know, if there’s a pandemic related things to what you do talk about that on your LinkedIn profile. But obviously, God willing, you know, sometime in the near future, that’s not going to be relevant anymore. So you can take it off. Right? So but showcasing what’s valuable now, and then updating it as that happens, but I love but you’re right, because it’s it is about how you show up. And, you know, people don’t realize how many times people throw your name in a Google search, and your LinkedIn profile is gonna show up. So why not just take even if you don’t do anything with your profile, which I want people to do something with their profile, but even if you don’t do anything with your profile, at least take the time to create a great profile. And the funny thing is, I talk to people a lot, obviously, about this, and they’re like, I like my profile was really good. And what I basically say now is well, it’s not hurting you, you know, it’s not hurting you It looks great, it’s professional, but it’s not helping you because it’s written like a resume, you know, like so it’s not so you know, why what having a profile that talks about what, what you do for the world, as opposed to I know word an Excel, right? Then people are like, wow, we need this, we need to connect with this person. And we need to work with this person, because they’ve got this kind of credit and, and the conferences and the, you know, and the different places that you’re speaking, they’ll also give you more credibility. And I can’t even tell you how many people I’ve talked to where they’re like, oh, I’ve done a lot of that stuff. I don’t, I should put that on my profile. Like, yeah, you need to put that on your profile, because people don’t have a magic wand, right? Like you might be really great at what you do. But if you don’t share those things with the world, how are people going to know? And especially as women, how, you know, we’re the ones that are like, well, I don’t want to brag, well, please brag, right? Or own it, as you say, own it, like as you know, like just own it like all that you did all these great things. So now you’re getting some speaking, more speaking engagements, right in this world that you’re you’re shifting into. So tell us a little bit about that. How have you done that?

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 19:42
Well, you know, and just I wanted to kind of backtrack a little bit into what we’re talking about. But you know, it’s funny you were saying about like your LinkedIn profile being a resume and, you know, I want to say to your listeners, like Karen was very clear, she’s like, this is not a this is not a commercial for my group. But that is a lot of our relationship. And so I can’t To help but go back to some of your teachings and stuff. Because, you know, I want anybody who’s on the fence listening to this, you know, to dive in with both feet when it comes to like them, because it’s a living, breathing thing. It is not like you said, it’s not a resume, it’s not, it’s not one dimensional. You know, it’s only one dimensional if you let it be. And if you listen to this today, and the only thing you get out of it is that you should get involved in LinkedIn. And you don’t have a picture of yourself or a banner or a headline, like, go do it as soon as today. But I’m talking about my conferences. Karen, I spent a year or two before I really dove in and started getting my things online, especially through LinkedIn, those things. And I was asking for these engagements, I was making these connections, and I wasn’t hearing back. But when I got online, when I started really engaging with people, when I started posting my videos, it’s helping people for free. You know, when I was learning something, I just would make a quick tutorial. Like if I learned something new. I got on there, I made a quick tutorial, and I just put it out there. And so and you know, and we have this vanity of like, Oh, no, no, no, let people watch it. Hey, well, first don’t watch it. I probably

Karen Yankovich 21:10
Yes, yes, absolutely. I mean, you know, think about like, if 10. People watch it, if somebody asked you to speak in front of a room of 10 people, you’d be happy to do that. Right? So yes, the numbers don’t matter. It’s impacting the people. I love that you’re saying that?

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 21:23
Yeah, it’s like, you kind of have to get past that, like, oh, now when people are watching. And, you know, one thing I talk about when I coach people is, I’m a big component of putting things on YouTube. And one of the reasons you know, and everything, I think everybody should have a YouTube channel. That doesn’t mean that you have to have a public YouTube channel that everybody searches and finds you. But um, we’re going to talk a little bit about getting started with video. Today, I’m gonna end talking with telling you a little bit about why you need to have a YouTube channel, and you shouldn’t be scared of it. Everybody should have one. And I’ll tell you a little bit about why that is we get to the end of the end of our little presentation here. So I know you want me to talk a little bit about myself.

Karen Yankovich 22:05
Yes. So please do that talk. I will tell everybody a little bit about what you do and how you help people and why we should you know, because what you’re talking what you’re teaching teachers, we all are on zoom. Right? We are all doing more video than we ever thought we were gonna do. Yeah, I have spent more money on makeup in the pandemic than I did a video all day long every day. Pickle now Gosh, am I out of mascara again? You know, so? Yeah. So tell us a little bit about how we can get some tips for our video.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 22:32
Absolutely. I mean, pre pandemic, we’re still waiting for like statistics now. But pre pandemic, they were already saying about 80% of people are visual learners, visual or auditory auditory learners. So if you are getting your genius out there, people and you are not using video or audio, you’re missing a huge crowd of people. So that is something you really need to think about. Because now that we’ve all been on zoom, we’ve all been on scenes, people they want video. And the thing is that we can’t always be live on zoom all the time. So I really talked to a lot of people about using screencasting. And using screencasting. Like I said before, because it’s a very low barrier of entry, right, we get a lot of people like, oh, I’ve got to get the right phone, or I’ve got to buy some equipment, you just need a laptop with a camera, which I think almost every laptop comes with a nowadays, or even an iPad with a camera to get started with this. So the three reasons I hear from educators and professionals in general about why they don’t make videos. As far as they don’t know what tools they need to get started. And number two, they don’t like the way they look or sound on video. And we’re going to talk a little bit about some really quick tips you can do to prove the way you look and a little understanding about how you sound on video. And I hear that from women especially, we are so hard on ourselves, we are so hard on ourselves. And we’re always like, Oh my god, ah, do I sound annoying, I can’t make a video. And it’s not about it’s not about that we’re gonna talk a little bit about that about the way you sound. And the last bit is what we talked a little bit about. People don’t know where to put their videos to be watched, or they don’t think they’re being watched. Or they don’t have a real understanding of what a successful video really is. It doesn’t have to go viral to be successful. If you help too few people, you’re making great video content, you know, and you only get better by doing. So let’s talk a little bit about I’m just going to dive in and talk a little quickly for those of you guys who this is a time that if you are at home listening or something, grab that little notebook so you can jot down a few things. If you’re in the car,

Karen Yankovich 24:31
you’re such a teacher.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 24:35
But come back, you know come back to this make sure you absolutely have time. So if you’re in the car because I know I lived with my podcast in the car, or I’m walking the dog. Make note that you got to come back and jot these things down. But the first thing to think about is screencasting is basically recording your screen if you’re not familiar with screencasting you can record your screen it was string casting you were record yourself, you can record Your screen was a little small picture. If you ever seen people, they do conferences, and there’s a little picture of them in the corner, right. So you have three options, we screencast, which is really nice, because depending on the content that we’re giving, you may want different forms of communicating with video, and you need to build to mic into your own computer, you’ll also need a webcam, and you need a screencasting extension. Now, the one that I recommend to all my students is screencastify. And I’ll say that again

Karen Yankovich 25:27
and we’ll put links in the show notes to all of this stuff.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 25:30
Why, because it has free extension to it, it has a free component, it’s ridiculously easy to use, and you can get started like that. So and one thing I like about screencastify is a lot of other screencasting groups were for different industries. screencastify was for education was for instruction from the get go. And a really cool thing that screencastify has that other programs are kind of catching up and trying to have is they have free courses that you can take and they’re not long, they’re half an hour an hour free courses to be certified in how to use them better. And they have fantastic tips in there. So you can go through their free course, if you really want to get a little extra, you don’t need a course to do it. But you can get that. And they also offer one for your students. So if you’re listening right now, and you’re an instructor, and you want your students to use screencasting, there’s a 10 minute tutorial that they already have prepared for you to listen to have your students take. So I really love screencastify for those reasons, you just have to literally go into Google, go to Google extensions, type in screencast by click on it, and it downloads right into your taskbar. And then it’s a few steps and you’re good to go. So let’s talk about it integrates really well with Google. And so I know everybody’s gonna using Google nowadays, if you’re using Microsoft team, it still works with that. But the thing I like about it is when you go to export in screencastify, you can export right to YouTube and publish right to YouTube. You can share it to Google Classroom, you can download it, you can make it an mp4, you can make it an mp3 so you can make you can actually make a podcast, you can make it a gift. So literally free tool. And this all the things you can do. Because even if you have a feature on your recording, like the difference between recording on your phone is that you need to this gives you so many different options to get it out into the world right away. And you make screencasts because you want to get your genius out to the world right away. Yeah, yeah, I worked for a few years as a video editor. I love video editing. I do very little if no editing on my videos, because I need to get my genius out people need to see it.

Karen Yankovich 27:35
I agree. If you I would rather take a little bit of time upfront to create a process that allows it to be easy to do when I got to do it. Yeah, I agree. Absolutely. And you know what I mean? You said this a few times. I want to emphasize it. People don’t expect it to be more than that. Like we especially women, we are like no, we have it, you probably have to edit it I have to do like no you don’t. You don’t. You know, like it’s not it doesn’t have to be perfect. It will be great. With just a little pre planning and then just whacking them out.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 28:06
Absolutely. And I’m glad that you brought that up because I want to bring up that one thing I’ve noticed like I follow a lot of people, big industry online people, James Wedmore, you know, Amy Porterfield, Jenna krisha, all those people who have been online for a long time as entrepreneurs, if you know any of those, I have noticed that they used to make expensive videos they used to I would see doing

Karen Yankovich 28:30
James Wedmore was all about video a lot of years, right.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 28:34
Um, but I noticed with his most recent launch, about a year or two ago, he was doing these polished almost like films, as his training videos as his hope to get you to join his program. And I was Wow, one day, but I can hire a team, I’m gonna have videos and they were clever and witty, and he’s a very smart entrepreneur. And because he’s a very smart entrepreneur, I realized this launch, he’s going back to basics. He’s screencasting and using his phone, you know, that’s what people want. Exactly, exactly what they want real. They want real. So if you’re like, I don’t look, you know, we’re going to talk about the way you look and feel. But if you’re like, Oh, I don’t have any polished or you know, I’m, I’m a mom, during the pandemic, my husband’s a teacher, too. We were teaching, we had kids online, we had dogs barking, it was real and you know, um, you know, I wanted to get things out to people and it wasn’t perfect. But yeah, you know, people want real.

Karen Yankovich 29:32
I agree. I love that.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 29:33
So if you are holding back because, you know, you don’t have the perfect setting. You know, don’t let that hold you back. People want to know you. And that’s the way they get to know you. So everybody wants to look good. So we’re going to talk about a few tips now here. So if you have your notepads time jump down or come back to us a little bit, listen to this again. But um, let’s talk a little bit about lighting and some basic things you can do in your home or office to improve your lighting. ultimately improve the way you look on camera, right. So you want to, you don’t need to buy a bunch of expensive lighting equipment. Although when you’re at that point, that’s a really great point to be at. But you want to go into a room that has light and bright pink colors, light colors into it, you ultimately, you want to think about setting up in front of a window, like I have a window right here, or you set up to the window is like your laptop is looking at you and you can look out the window, okay, cuz that that will fill your face, right, that type of lighting will fill your face, fill in the creases in your face, you won’t have as many dark shadows. And you want to use, you want to set up in front of a window, you don’t want your back to the to the window that is called backlighting. And that’s going to create a lot of harsh shadows. So the windows are your friends, find a light room with light paint, find a window that you can set up in front of and it will fill your face with light and automatically your videos would be better. Um, let’s talk about if you do need a little lighting. So inexpensive ring light. Now you see a lot of people who say beauty and glamour lights, but you can get a little ring light that actually clips right onto the top of your computer that you can get for like under 20 bucks. I know I have one on my computer right now it’s from five below. So you might see them as they might be called glamour. They might be called glamour lighting for your iPhone. So something like that is a simple way to add just a little extra light to your face. And those are great ways to just improve the way you look automatically on video, my secret, my little secret tip that I want to give you guys that I don’t hear anybody talking about this. But I use this all the time, I use a white poster board. So if you’re like on a budget, right? Put it down on whatever surface you are doing your video on. So if you’re at a desk with me in a dark brown desk right now, now that color is gonna reflect into my face, right? So I need to I put a white poster board down and I don’t have that same reflection, it just bounces the light from the room onto my face. So it’s really simple. So if you’re like, I can’t get started. We can all afford a poster board, right? Yeah, yeah. Yep. And earlier this year, we were in pandemic mode. It was like snow storm. And of course, there’s no snow days anymore for teachers. And my husband was teaching upstairs, my son was in the living room on class and I had our Christmas red Christmas club table on my dining room, which was a teaching crumb. And I noticed one of my students like Dr. Cameron, you’re really red in the face today. Big Red tablecloth reflecting into my face. So I looked up my poster board and put it down. And it made a huge difference.

Karen Yankovich 32:43
Such a great tip. I mean, just buy a piece and have it so that if you if you’re in your dining room or whatever have it you know, that’s such a great tip, Jenny, I love that I actually bought in the pandemic. Also, one of the things that I bought during the pandemic was an actual desktop setup, as opposed to a laptop, because I do most of my work from here and even non pandemic time. So I bought a great, you know, fast computer and a couple monitors. It’s a little bit like NASA in here. But I have a light called a loom cube. Have you heard of those? Yes, yeah. And it’s smacks to the back of my monitor. And my problem is the monitors are bright, but that’s not the right color bright. Do you know what I mean? So I don’t tend to have my I don’t look dark. But I look and I’m not you know, I look bright from the because I have these big gigantic monitors here. But the lung cube softens it just changes the color of the light. And I don’t use it all that often. But it’s just there. And what I love about it most is it’s not like I have a ring light, but I rang and I do have the Clippy ones too, which I love. But the big ring light needs to be on a stand and then a stand needs to be behind your desk and then there’s plugs and cables and cords and this is just snaps to the back of my computer and then plugs into a USB port and it always works. So that was one of my like pandemic buys. I love this little cube again because it wasn’t that I needed to brighten my face but the color was just making washing me out because it was just all of this LED, you know,

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 34:03
yeah, and you want to like I like the lean cubes as well. You want that kind of white light you don’t want like a yellowish light, like your lamp light might have a yellowish yellowish right? That’s what do you want that like white light that is balanced on All right.

Karen Yankovich 34:17
All right, we’re going so long on this What’s next?

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 34:19
Alright, what’s next? Um, okay, if this is the probably one of my best tips is to get a computer stand if you don’t have one. So I don’t know how many times I have gone to a conference great idea. Listen to someone on a zoom call or listen to someone and authority in their field. They are a leader in their field and I look it up their notes because all it is I’m looking at Yeah, and I can’t hear what they have to say because you know, it’s just a simple computer Stan, you can get 120 bucks you want or if even if you can’t go that route. If you’re just starting out. A little milk crate I have one day I was filming at the library because I have kids. So sometimes I have to go where it’s quiet. And I forgot my stand. I was like my whole setup over here. And I grabbed

Karen Yankovich 35:08
library right books. I’ve done that for years. I did books. For years, I did books. Yeah, I get it, I get it. We’re recording this right now on my iPad. So that’s very low. So I’m like, she’s looking at my nose right now. But whatever it is just, I get it. And I’ve seen like, somebody, even our program recently did some videos, and they were great. And I just I hesitated to even say, because I don’t want to make her think like, I was criticizing it. But I was just like, if you just move the camera up, and you know what I mean? And it’s gonna be such a better visual for you, you know? So I don’t know if you were involved in that conversation or not. But it was, uh, I don’t remember who even who it was. But I remember looking at the videos and thinking, Oh, my gosh, if just the angle was changed, that would make such a big difference on this.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 35:51
Absolutely. And to say that the other way around. I have like a leader that I follow on the teacher space, and she is phenomenal. But she has that. Okay, I can say this, because I know there are a lot of women listening to this there. Yes, we want this to be real. So let’s say we put that phone up, we put it up high, because we look thinner. Do not put your camera up too high. Because she had this camera that’s up Hi, this this, I love this woman, I follow her. She’s fantastic. I will continue to follow her. But I always feel like she’s broadcasting from NASA, I can see the top of her screen camera up here. I feel like we’re in a control. So you want it to be personal. Whether you’re in a live call or through recording, do you want to feel personal. So not only do you want to and I’ll give you another quick tip that is kind of juicy that I share with people when I do zoom coaching because I also coach people on helping them more comfortable in zoom. When it’s your turn to talk. Or if you are recording and you’re talking to someone, you want to look straight into the camera. We want to look at the person on the screen that’s asking the question because that’s natural. But it gives us the feeling that we’re not looking them in the eye. And even though it doesn’t feel natural to look right into the camera, when you’re talking, it gives the person on the other end the feeling that you’re connecting with them. And that has a lot to do with our brain chemistry and our ability to make a communication loop and connection. So if you’re on a live call with someone, or if you’re recording a video, don’t be looking down at your screen when you’re addressing people look up as much as you can into the camera. Because although you can’t see the reaction, we all want to see the reaction the person’s face, it will make the person on the other end feel more emotional connected to you. And that’s really what you want.

Karen Yankovich 37:36
Yeah, so that’s a good tip. I know, that’s a hard one to learn. Because you just want to watch the person, you want to watch the people you’re talking to, like, you feel like you need to be looking them in the eye. But then they feel like you’re not looking them in the eye.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 37:46
Yes, they feel less. Right. Right, you know, and they don’t feel as connected to you. And that’s ultimately like, video is such a powerful thing. But if you don’t use it correctly, it can have the opposite effect make people feel disengaged, rather more, right. That’s what we want.

Karen Yankovich 38:03
And these little tips make such a big difference to the quality of your video, way more than an expensive camera or anything like that, like these little tips are much more important than those kinds of things.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 38:15
Absolutely, absolutely. One, let’s go hit the next one is a simple tip. But you know, it always stands repeating your background, like I hopped in our car real quick, and I have my husband’s music sheets in the background here. But like, make sure you don’t have anything inappropriate, or I don’t want people to see, if you don’t want the world to see pictures of your kids, then don’t know your kids, because you’re not going to want to what’s gonna happen later is when you realize you made a fantastic video, but you and your husband or wife talked about you don’t want your kids on the internet, you’re not gonna post that video.

Karen Yankovich 38:49
Right? This is another great tip that for me during the pandemic, I started out with my green screen. And it’s gigantic. It’s gigantic, it would be like Actually, it was having construction done in my office. So I was in my dining room and I had the green screen in the dining room. And it’s just like it’s too big to move every day or put away every day. And then it’s out all the time. So one of the things I did when I redid my office was I kind of just was intentional about what was behind me so that I could just turn the camera on and talk. Right so you know it is sometimes because like I do have to sometimes double check because like my office is where I’ll leave the dog when I’m not home. So sometimes there’s like a doggie pee pad like it just in case pad interview. So I need to double check when I turn the camera on that there’s nothing in the view of of that, you know, but um, but yeah, it made such a big difference to be able to just turn the camera on or jump on zoom with someone and not be like, hold on. Let me find the green screen. Let me do like I just didn’t do it as much because it was too complicated. So just by having like a simple a simple like behind like, again, I have a desktop so it’s at my desk and behind me you know where that this is where my normal camera is, is is tends to be it’s so much easier. It makes it easier for me to do more videos. Right And that’s really the goal. I mean, I don’t need to be candidates to make things more complicated for myself. I love that. Yeah.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 40:05
If you’re listening right now, I just have given away all my best tips here. But yes, my way out there for you, if you’re listening to this, and you’re probably like me, like when I’m at work my office, I have a great setup. You know, I like what’s in the background. It represents me, I have children’s books behind me all kinds of things that have to do with what I do as an instructional coach. And when I I’m really confident when I’m on zoom there, or I’m recording a video there because I know what’s behind me really represents who I am. But in my home, I have a small home. I have kids, I have dogs. I have a husband. We have junk everywhere. I mean, we’re living room. We’re living that lifestyle right now. Yeah. I can’t have that picture perfect house right now one day, but I don’t you know, and let’s get real most of us don’t. And most Yeah, we can do and, and we don’t realize it right off camera is all their junk, right? Yes. Perfect. don’t have that space. One trick that I would recommend for you. I was following a girl in yoga that was doing this. So ingenious. One day when she showed me her backdrop. She literally bought a with like a collapsible little like room divider, you know, pretty ones. Oh, yeah. screen share online, she put it behind her because she lived in a little, like a little apartment she did. She put it behind her. And she put a couple of little hooks, where she put some like yoga, little yoga like mantras and posters up behind her. I said she’s a yoga studio, I thought she was right. Beautiful place.

Karen Yankovich 41:35
She’s genius, right? And it’s probably 20 bucks, 50 bucks, maybe to do that. And it saves you. And by the way, when you’re doing more videos, you’re making more money, right? So, you know, it’s just as a fact, is a fact people connect with you more and, you know, so anything you can do to simplify it, and so that you show up more professional, but also, you know, like an app where you can connect with people. Like anything you do to make it simple. It’s so much It’s so cool.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 42:03
You’re so right. And yeah, that was her little setup was is she had this little room divider and actually filled up and she put it under her bed, which was amazing it Oh, that’s perfect. I mean, um, so you know, if you’re feeling like, I can’t do this, I don’t have the perfect space. Very few of us really do. Right? Especially if you don’t have your own office and stuff like that. So think you know, you gotta be here, think about how can you be like kind of ingenuitive with that, right? So your background matters. Let’s just talk about sound really quickly with your voice. No, I hear this from women. I actually don’t think I’ve ever heard this from a man before. Although gentlemen, if you’re listening, maybe you have this problem, you just haven’t voiced it to me. But I hear this from women all of time. I hate the way I sound. I don’t sound like myself. I sound annoying. I can’t put this video out there because I cringe listening to myself on it. And that keeps people from posting videos, if you’re their credit, these daily cringe listings themselves? Well, there’s little science behind that. And the science behind that is when you’re listening to yourself, you actually hear the reverberation of your voice in your skull. So you actually truly don’t hear yourself the way everybody else hears you. So when you hear your voice played back, especially if you don’t listen to yourself all the time, they care, I’m sure because you listened to your podcast all the time, you’re used to the waist down. But a lot of people when it’s your first time recording, they may not be used to the sound of their voice. And then it keeps them from posting the videos because they’re like, Oh, no, people are gonna stumble and say the are still a lot. And so the first thing is, you can’t help that you can’t change that. But I felt when I embraced that, that understanding, it helped me get past a little bit more. And the second part is, you don’t have to write an entire script. But if you’re going to do a screencast It is very advisable to write out what you want to say first, even if it’s just bullet points, and practice it a couple of times. Yeah, I practice in the car a lot because like I said, I’m a busy mom. So when I get that moment when I’m actually by myself or the kids have the ear buds in and they’re you know doing videos in the back of a car, I will just talk to myself and talk about my podcast, check out my video that I want to make. And you know that’s how I find time to do that. So when I am recording is not the first time I’ve talked about this. Um, and the other thing is I people is always started like a zillion times but keep starting with a finish. If you’re in the middle of upgrading instructional video, and you know you’re giving value and you mess up, just stop for a second. Close your eyes. take a pause, keep going. You don’t have to go back and edit that because remember is real and people want real.

Karen Yankovich 44:46
Yeah, yeah. They want the content more than they want to wait until it’s perfect.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 44:52
Yeah. Kinda like to see the people are falling, being perfect sometimes to real, your advice is more real. They’re talking to their friend, they’re not, you know, listening and talking to their friend not like you know, somebody that’s unattainable. So just pause, close your eyes for a second, and then starting here. And, um, you know, it’s funny, I think I took that original ways from, like Amy Porterfield back in the, you know, several years. Yeah. Yeah, I’ll do that. Because she’s, you know, she’s always, you know, yeah, she’s fantastic podcast and Devon, I hear

Karen Yankovich 45:21
when she shares it. It’s not she’s not comfortable always doing this stuff, right. So, you know, here’s the thing, like, I get that I’ve felt that way, too. And what I basically said to myself is, listen, I don’t know, if I don’t, I may not like the sound of my voice. But this is how other people hear me all the time. You know, so I have to get over it. Because this is what I sound like. So I can either, you know, like, it’s not like I changed the way I talk when I talk into a microphone, right? It’s the same way I talk when I’m talking to somebody in the street. So, you know, this is how they hear me all the time. It’s just, I have to just get over the fact that I don’t like it, you know, and because this is what I sound like. So yeah, so And the same with video. The same with video. I mean, obviously, angles and lighting and things like that are important. But at the end of the day, this is what I look like, you know, so I had to just kind of get over that. And, and, and keep telling myself that this is people hear all the time anyway. So I can sit here and not do it and not make any money or I can start doing videos and start building my business with them.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 46:19
And you’re absolutely right, because that’s that’s what makes you money. Right. Getting out there. That’s great. Right? Right. That hesitation that holds you back. Well, this a hesitation that makes you that 1% that does it while everybody else is sitting on the sidelines saying they wish they could,

Karen Yankovich 46:33
yes. And thinking and you know, here’s the thing, like you have a podcast, I have a podcast, anybody can have a podcast, right? But because we have a podcast, it gives us some credibility over people that are sitting on their couch saying I need to do a podcast, right? So that credibility helps you land clients and helps you get the bigger opportunities, right. So it’s, it’s you just got to do it. You just got to start doing it.

I love that. And I think I love that.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 46:57
Video and audio create trust, yes, we want people to trust you. Yeah, trusting you with their money. They’re trusting you with their vulnerability. Yeah, hear your voice or see your face. They don’t trust you. And I like to my teachers who make videos all the time. One big thing. And when I work with teachers, we talked about making videos that are sustainable, that you can use over and over again. And you can use to automate your teaching. So talk about making videos to answer the questions that you’re asked 100 times a day, and not only make the video to save you time, but when you have that parent who’s desperate on a Sunday night, and they can’t figure out how to turn in their kids assignment and the kids crying at the table and they’re frustrated. And they’re gonna send you that hail melee, Hail Mary email, like, how do I do this? Instead, they can just go to your video, or Yes, and they hear your voice and they see your face salutely for our 24 seven customer service, when you’re there, it feels like they’re getting you all the time. But you’re not there all the time.

Karen Yankovich 47:57
So Jenny, I want to just tell you like a quick funny story about backgrounds before we because I when you’re talking about different backgrounds, it reminded me of like when I moved as the house I live in now I completely gutted the house. Like every piece of trim every piece of carpet, everything was gutted in the house. And the first room that I rebuilt was the bedroom because I needed to sleep in there. Alright, I need to be able to breathe and not be dusty, whatever. So I did a lot of videos against a white wall and you know, a light wall in the bedroom. And if you came over, you would have no totally looked at it and said, Oh yeah, she’s doing videos in front of the white wall. But there was a day that my parents were coming over. And I thank God, I walked into my bedroom, and I saw the bed with the camera over it. And I was like, Oh my God, because the camera was at the end of the bed facing the wall. Right. But all I saw was the camera at the end of the bed. And I I couldn’t stop laughing like for two days. I was like, oh my god. Like they already think like she does some internet thing. You know what I mean? So they already don’t know what I do. Because my parents are all teacher. My family is all teachers. So they don’t know what I do. It was the funniest thing. And I was like, Oh my god, they’re gonna walk in here and see the camera over the bed and go, this is how she makes her money. Right? It was the only white wall I had in my whole house. Oh my god, it was the funniest thing. So that’s what I mean, you got to improvise. I also had a time where I was doing. I was doing videos for like a sales page. So they were kind of scripted. And so I have like my iPad with a app or that it plays the words for you. I can’t even think what it’s called right now. Yeah, that thing, like I wanted that to be right by the camera. So I had a ladder with the paint cam thing. And I had the iPad sitting on the paint cam thing next to the like so anything you got to do and then sometimes you need books underneath of your, you know your tripod so that it’s high enough that it matches the thing like I have gone through everything in my house to make the camera and everything be at the level but when you what you see is just, you know me, but it’s what people do. You don’t need to buy these fancy things. You don’t need to buy anything fancy. So Jenny, tell us what you’re doing now and how people can continually get tips from you.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 49:54
Oh, awesome. Hello. I am actually this summer. I am kind of in full launch mode. I’m actually Well, I will be probably by the time you’re listening to this, but I am actually you can go to my website teaching with Jenny calm. And I will have there at that time I’m working on it right now, I will be getting, I have a free training for you to take. And if you like a lot of these tips, a lot of them will be in the free training. And ultimately, free training is honestly to encourage you to take my course. And of course, it’s called the automated classroom. But if you are professional, and you’re not a teacher, I would say that this is definitely still of course that you could take where I talk about my philosophy around three videos you need to make to automate your life. And both your instruction. I am also available for private coaching online, so you can reach out to me through LinkedIn.

Karen Yankovich 50:42
And I will link in the show notes. Awesome.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 50:45
You know, just having that person to talk to you sometimes. If you’re listening to this, you probably have a lot of people in your life that don’t know what the heck you were doing. Right? Like Carolyn, you were saying, you know, yeah, you need that community, you need the help you need those people to run that by so I help with zoom coaching. I help people do presentations, if they’re nervous about doing their presentations, helping them through everything they need to know for their zoom. Also, I coach for screencasting helping you make instructional videos. You can find me on Facebook lender teaching with Jenny calm Instagram with

Karen Yankovich 51:17
Yeah, well, we will link all of that stuff. Ultimately, what you’re doing is you’re helping people become more successful with little like the little tips you taught here today. You know, with little tips like that, that when we were trying to think of before I Jenny was teleprompter. So anyway, for those of you that were hanging like a clip of what we were trying to think of before the word was teleprompter to funny. So Jenny, this has been so awesome. I cannot wait to see. So what’s next for you? What’s next? Your courses? Next? What else is on the horizon? You’re available for speaking at conferences, right and podcasts interviews, what else

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 51:51
many conferences and you know, next for me is my podcast is launching this summer, which really excited about and that’s going to be using automated tips to integrate technology into your teaching and instruction. So I’m really excited for that. That’s going to be by the time hopefully you listen to this while I will be you will be able to go over and listen to my podcast as well. So yeah, being available, speak at conferences, I have my course out, I will most likely have another zoom course out in the future because I you know if you if you’re thinking like video is dead, it’s not dead, right? Like people are like, oh, pandemics over, we can go back to our regular…

Karen Yankovich 52:26
Zoom fatigue. Right?

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 52:28
Yeah, we’re all little containers of of the truth of the matter is, it’s a really efficient and productive way. Yes.

Karen Yankovich 52:34
Yes, it really is. I got to go to so many like Chamber of Commerce meetings that I never would have driven to. right there’s I’m so I’m hoping that there’s still going to be like a virtual component to a lot of the networking things that are available to us. So I agree with you. I don’t think video is going anywhere. And I think the the better we are that, you know, listen, like you said when you met that person and you gave her your card and they saw your LinkedIn profile, the better first impression you make, the better chance you have and the faster you grow your success. Right. So take the time to create a great first impression whether it’s video or your LinkedIn profile, or both, right, so Oh my gosh, awesome.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 53:14
Yeah, absolutely can’t wait. I can just say real quick for people get your videos on LinkedIn, because LinkedIn is a little ahead of the curve where they play your video in the feed. So let’s feed stopping, you know, if you want to use like an Insta stories, they have a place where you can do the same type of thing. LinkedIn, LinkedIn gives you 20 seconds, that’s more than any other social media gives you. Yeah, they’re just they really are a little ahead of everybody in the video. And I kind of feel like they’re their best kept secret in town.

Karen Yankovich 53:44
I agree, which is why I’m doing what I do. And you know what the one last plug on those LinkedIn stories you can see on LinkedIn stories, you have a swipe up immediately. So you can get Swipe up to your to your content. You don’t need to have 10,000 followers to have swipe up. So cool. All right, Jenny, this has been so good to have you here today. I am so excited to see what’s next for you. Thank you so much for being here with us today and sharing all those amazing tips. I’m saying all those nice things about about what you’ve learned from us because we love watching you shine.

Dr. Jennifer Cameron 54:12
And thank you so much for having me Karen. It was absolutely a dream to be on your show.

About the Episode:

The last year has been unique and challenging. During the pandemic, we adjusted to a new normal with so many areas of our life becoming virtual. Now that we’re nearing the end of this pandemic, things are starting to get back to the way they were pre-Covid.

Returning to pre-Covid times can be stressful, however. You might not be in the groove of doing as many things in-person as you were before. As you start going to in-person networking events again, here are some best practices to follow to help keep you from getting overwhelmed.

  1. Before the Event: Before you go anywhere, discern what you say “yes” to. It’s okay to say “no” sometimes. If you do decide to go to the event, take the time to connect with people before you go.
  2. During the Event: While you’re there, network with people. It’s critical to make sure your LinkedIn URL is on your business card.
  3. After the Event: When it’s all over, make sure you follow up with people. Set aside the next day (or at least a portion of the day) to connect with them. If you’re not following up with people, what’s the point in even going to the event?

Follow these best practices for returning to in-person events, and you’ll find yourself less stressed and more ready to make meaningful connections.

So I’ve talked a lot on this show in the last couple months about how much I really enjoyed virtual networking. Now listen, I definitely miss people. I xO x, it’s so amazing to be able to go to parties, again, birthday parties, I went to a birthday party yesterday and another one a couple weeks ago and you know, having dinner with friends. And you know, I am was very cautious in the past year and a half very, very cautious. I have elderly, elderly parents and I have grandchildren and you know, I just want people to see them. Right? They’re the most important people in my life. So I was, you know, did a lot of soul I did a lot of of quarantining for a good part of the last 18 months. So now as things are opening up, I’m finding that like, I’m not in my groove. I don’t know if you can relate to that. Right? Are you relating? Can you relate to like, trying to remember what life was like back two years ago, and trying to get back into that groove? You know, I found that for some reason, finding, it’s very easy to get swamped by this, you know, I went from like doing nothing for like a year and a half, to having like back to back to back events and more, I’m going out a couple times a week. And like, I bought a car. I’m not even a year ago, like September of 2020. And I had like, no marijuana for the first six months. And now it’s got 15,000 miles on it, right? Like, how is that possible? Because I’m running around a lot more now. And it’s not great. It’s not great. I found I kind of went straight from, I don’t know, from not doing anything to doing too much. So I had to pull back the reins, and I’m going to talk to you a little bit about how that worked for me. I mean, I don’t know, it’s not like riding a bike. You know, I just it’s not like riding a bike. It’s, it’s different. It’s different. And, and maybe, you know, this is me completely, you know, my armchair psychoanalysis of the last two years, I think we’re gonna be learning for many years about the the psychology around having to quarantine and all that crazy stuff. But you know, at the end of the day, it’s just, it’s just for me, and for many people that I talk to, it’s just not that easy to just kind of go back into it. So I’m following some best practices. Now that I’ve pulled back a little bit, and I want to share them with you today. You know what, what I’m doing? So first thing we want to talk about is like before we do something, right, like so the before we go anywhere, I have learned that it’s even more important than it’s ever been for me to be discerning about what I say yes to, you know, I’m hoping that there’s still going to be a virtual component to a lot of networking events because I was able to do networking with organizations that I never would have driven to right so and maybe I won’t be able to do it anymore with them. Who knows, but I can tell you this. I’m not driving along. over the place to go to go to networking events and and nor do I ever really do that before to be honest. But somehow, I found myself not being discerning about what I said yes, say yes to. So take, you know, it’s okay to say no, it’s okay to not go straight back to whatever you think you should be doing. It’s okay to take baby steps, right, like so think, be really be really mindful of what you’re saying yes to. And then once you make that decision, maybe it’s one event a month, maybe it’s one event a week, please don’t do more than one event a week initially, though, I mean, that’s just my my request of you. Because I think that what I’m hearing from not just not just my experience, that many people are just like, a little overwhelmed by, you know, kind of getting back into the real world. So pick an event, whether it’s one a week, one a month, whatever that works, whatever works for you, or, you know, when you’re ready, maybe you’re not ready yet. Right, but, and then connect with people ahead of time there maximize the impact of these events, you know, even prior to like, you know, 2020, like, even five years ago, I you know, I talked to people all the time about networking, right, LinkedIn is virtual networking. And I would talk to people that I knew locally, and that would go to all these different Chamber of Commerce meetings, and for all these different organizations, chambers of commerce and local women’s organizations and, you know, 2345 networking meetings a week. And then they tell me, I know, I know, you’re going to follow up after these meetings can but I just don’t have time I live well, maybe if you didn’t go to five networking meetings a week, you’d actually maximize what you’re doing with these meetings, right? Like, I mean, I can’t I can think of people very clearly, I can see them very clearly, people that were not profitable in their business. And they’re like, I’m not working, I’m not working, I’m not working. But it’s not working. I’m like, Yeah, because you’re networking, and you’re not following up, right. So maximize the time you’re spending pick one thing and then maximize it, Are there speakers at this event, connect with them on LinkedIn ahead of time. By the way, I’m going to like take a little pause here and say, this all works really well, if your profile is great. And you know, I’ve got lots of episodes about that. And actually episode, an upcoming episode, Episode 172, is actually going to talk a lot of a lot about that as well. But for now, just know that you really want to do a good job of maximize of creating a great LinkedIn profile, because it makes this all a lot easier, but connect with the speakers ahead of time connect with the event organizers ahead of time, if you know of other people going to the event connect with them ahead of time, right? So, so Connect ahead of time, so that when you go to the event, now we’re gonna move on to during, so before, we want to be discerning, and we want to do what whatever connection we can do ahead of time, right? So that when you go to the event, you already have some people you’re you’re looking forward to, to talking to. And then once you get to the event, you know, it’s so funny, when I was doing this, when I was creating the outline for this episode, it was really interesting to me how you know, if you may not have noticed this, but on most of my episodes, I have three pieces of content that I want to share. And in this case, it’s the before the during and the after. And the before and the after I can talk for 20 minutes, the during I didn’t have I don’t have I don’t have much to say write, which is interesting, because it’s the drawing that people think is the most valuable part of this, but it’s not. It’s not. I mean, yes, you want to meet the people in person, and you want to, you know, hopefully you have business cards. And I know like sometimes people feel like that’s 1980 you know, networking, but at the end of the day, you want people to follow up with you, right. So if you have business cards, make sure your LinkedIn URL is on that business card. So people can because what it does is it gives people implicit permission to connect with you afterwards right to follow up with you. Because that’s where the money is, it’s not talking to all the people while you’re at the event, and eating cheese and crackers, it’s the follow up, it’s getting actual business out of these, you wouldn’t be going through these things, unless you’re looking to get business out of them, right. So make sure that your LinkedIn URL is on your business card, share it, you know, share it generously. But take note of the people that you meet and kind of just try to think about like, obviously, you want to follow up with a bunch of people that you meet. But there should be a couple people one or two, maybe three people that you really see some potential and, and potential doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re going to hire you. Right or they’re going to buy from you potential might be there’s collaboration opportunities, maybe there’s people they can introduce you to, you know, you never really know. But think about those couple people and make make make me able to store on their card or something, something that will identify like, for whatever reason, this is somebody that I really want to check out once this is over. But you know, do your do your thing, go around, do the schmooze and talk to people get their business cards, give me your business cards. And then afterwards now first of all, when you’re putting this event on your calendar, also put an hour on your calendar for the day after the event for follow up. This is probably the most profitable piece of advice anybody’s ever gonna give you in your life. Right? I can tell you like if I if I’m speaking at an event if you want if you need a LinkedIn speaker, by the way, reach out to me if I’m speaking at an event, let’s say the events on a Tuesday and Sam flying to the event. I make sure that my ideal calendar is to fly back late Wednesday. So I have a Wednesday morning to do my follow up. So if the events a Tuesday, I get a flight for Wednesday afternoon. So Wednesday morning, I can do my follow up. Obviously you don’t, you know, obviously, we’re not flying to all networking events. So you don’t need that much time. But just put an hour the next day, I can tell you there are times that I don’t do this, for whatever reason the networking event was last minute, or just as a busy day, I couldn’t do it. And I always regret it, I always regret it. Because what’s the point of going if you’re not going to follow up with people, and you know, look to try to get some actual business out of this stuff, right? So, but you’re on the calendar, you know, the day before you even go to the event, put the hour on the calendar for the next day. So that you know, or maybe later that same day, if it’s a morning thing, right? And then use LinkedIn to follow up. Now think about this. If you meet somebody at an event, and they follow up with you the next day on linked on an email or Facebook, you don’t know any more about them than you knew before. Frankly, Facebook might be a little nervy right. You don’t really know them that well yet. So they’re gonna follow up with you on Facebook, right? Like you’re not friends yet. You just met them last night. So and an email, like you just going into the black hole of most people’s email box. But if you follow up on LinkedIn afterwards, and you’ve done the work on your profile, then you’re shining a light on your best self. Right. And now you’re following up on LinkedIn, you know, hey, Mary, so great to meet you last night. Hopefully, you’ve got some little notes about it. You know, I really I know you’re going to Disney World next week. And I’m so I can’t wait to hear how it goes. But I really do I really, I’m really impressed by the work you do. I’d love to connect with you here on LinkedIn. And maybe when you get back, we can get together and have some coffee and really get to know each other. Right like something like that actual relationship follow ups on LinkedIn. Now remember, if your LinkedIn is a vast wasteland of you know, dust, because you haven’t touched it in five years, this isn’t gonna be all that all that, you know, effective for you. But if your LinkedIn profile positions you as a rockstar, then when Mary sees that, she’s going to be saying, Wow, I have no idea this person that I met last night was such a big deal, I really, I am totally looking forward to following up and getting to know them better, right? It’s on you to do that it’s on you to do that, to do that, to make a pro to have a profile that shows the best of you. So when you’re doing that, and you’re following up, make sure you’re following up with the people that you have stars, right, that’s really important to follow up with the starred people. But obviously follow up with other people too. Like, I don’t want you to connect with everyone. Because frankly, that’s a complete waste of your time and their time. Nobody needs to have 100 new new connections every week. But if you’re going to this networking event, or this conference, or whatever the in person event is that you’re doing, you are going there because you think there’s business opportunities, right that there’s people there that could further your business goals. So make sure that you’re I mean, how many times have you gone to a conference, and you leave, and you’re like what just happened, like what just happened? Because it’s crazy. So the drawing is fun, but it’s the before and the after that are valuable. And even more. So now that it’s like second half of 2021. Because, like I said, we are have no real learning how to do this in many, many ways. Like some of it is definitely, you know, like riding a bike, but some of it somehow isn’t. So, so be discerning, let’s just review this for a second, be discerning about what you say yes to. And then when you make those decisions, whatever, that’s whatever you’re comfortable with one a month, one a week, you can always add another one, right, but start small and then build on it. Because somehow like me, then you won’t be like me and swamp yourself, right. So be discerning about what you say yes to, and then do your due diligence before the event, make that put that calendar item on the day after right so that you can make sure you do the follow up. And then connect with people ahead of time. Maybe the speakers at the event, the organizers for the and other people that are at the event that the second thing part of it is while you’re at the event during the event, you know, make sure that you’re like just identify a couple people that you think you know what I want to know more about this person, it’s really not the time to do that when you’re you know, having cheese and crackers and wine or soda or coffee or whatever, you know, you really, you know, it’s small talk, but it’s the time to do the, you know, to kind of to do to kind of vet the audience, vet the people there and see who is it that you really want to follow up with. And obviously, I don’t want you to do with everyone because I don’t want you to waste your time. I don’t have time for it. And I everything I teach is really about maximizing your time. And then the last thing is follow up afterwards. Follow up on LinkedIn afterwards, follow up with a great profile, show the best of you and do it in a way that is very personal, so that you’re literally building actual relationships, not just having lots of pen pals and connections, right. You know, it’s okay to ease back into in person. Work, do when you’re ready. You just no need to dive in headfirst, like somehow I ended up doing right. If because if you know, here’s the thing, if we’ve learned anything from the 2020 pandemic, we’ve learned to choose the people that we spend time with carefully, right like what do we have cohorts like who was in your cohort, we can extend that to our business who are the people? We don’t you don’t have to be you don’t have to spend time with everyone. When you don’t have to connect with everyone, be discerning be choosy, and then only follow up with and really dive into the people that you think that there’s real value to because this maximizes your time and I don’t want you spinning your wheels. I want you to go to less events, dive deeper and come out of those events with a couple people that can really change your business your life and your bank account for ever. That’s what we do in our she’s linked up program right I talked about the fact that our goal is to create wealthy women of influence is these are the kinds of things I talk to you about here are the kinds of things we teach in that program.
